Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC – Should Windows Update be Automatic or Manual?

Hi Microsoft,

I’m using Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 on a personal computer.

I would like to know Microsoft’s recommendation regarding Windows Update:

  1. Should Windows Update be left on Automatic, or is it okay to set it to Manual?
  2. If using Manual updates, how often does Microsoft recommend checking for updates?
  3. Would checking for updates once a month, for example 7–14 days after Patch Tuesday, be a reasonable approach?
  4. Is there any security disadvantage to manually checking once a month instead of leaving Windows Update automatic?

I mainly want to keep the system secure while avoiding installing updates immediately if a newly released update has compatibility or stability issues.

Thank you.

    Hello @Minh Hoàng

For Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024, I would generally recommend leaving Windows Update enabled rather than relying entirely on manual monthly checks.

LTSC prevents the normal feature-update cadence, but it still receives monthly cumulative quality/security updates. Microsoft specifically notes that IoT Enterprise LTSC is most secure and stable when the latest cumulative update is installed.

    A few points:

    • Automatic updates: Best choice for a personal PC because critical security fixes aren't accidentally missed.
    • Manual updates: Possible, but you take responsibility for monitoring and installing every security update.
    • Waiting 7–14 days: This can reduce exposure to an update that develops compatibility problems, but it also leaves the PC without that month's security fixes during the delay. I wouldn't make this a fixed rule for critical or actively exploited vulnerabilities.
    • LTSC doesn't mean “no updates.” It mainly provides a stable feature set. Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 still receives monthly quality updates and is supported through October 2034.

For your goal of balancing security and stability, I'd keep automatic updates enabled and use Microsoft's Windows release-health information to check for known issues when you're concerned about a particular monthly update.
