videos not playing in PowerPoint LIVE

In the last few weeks when presenting in powerpoint live the videos I have embedded dont play for the audience, but play for me on my screen. I use standard MP4s that Ive been using for years in PPTX and all of a sudden they arent playing. Any ideas?

Hi H,

There was no 'optimize compatibility' option, but I compressed the media while I was in there. I'm using current Teams app and PPTX version 2607.

It seems to be happening only in the last few weeks with new presentations I'm creating or older ones that I'm adding a new video to. I only use MP4. My laptop is constantly getting updates so Im not sure if it started happening after an update.

The problem in detail is that I open a teams meeting and share a presentation from my PPTX Live list. The powerpoint runs as per normal, but videos that play on my screen only show as a still image from their end. If I click back a slide and then come forward again the video plays for the audience.

Based on your sharing, since the video plays for you locally but not for attendees, I suspect this is a PowerPoint Live rendering/playback-path issue.

I suggest you first open the presentation in the PowerPoint desktop app and go to File > Info > Optimize Compatibility. If the option appears, run it, save the file, then test again in PowerPoint Live. This Optimize Compatibility will help you check for media issues that may affect playback on other devices.

Does the issue happen with every embedded video or only specific videos/decks?
What are the PowerPoint and Teams versions, and since you said it started “in the last few weeks”, did this start after an update?

Hi Hendrix. There was no 'Optimize Compatibility' option under Info. I'm using Microsoft Apps for Enterprise PPTX Versions 2607 and the latest version of Teams. Also compressed media while I was in there.

Here's the problem in more detail. I open a meeting in Teams and then share the PowerPoint from the Powerpoint Live files. Powerpoint shows on my screen and audience screen. The presentation runs normally until I try a slide with a video embedded. On my PPTX live screen the video plays as I want it, but for the audience it looks like a still image. If I hit go back to the previous slide and then go back to the video slide it then is playing for the audience.

If Optimize Compatibility is not shown, that means PowerPoint is not detecting a media compatibility problem in the deck. Also, since going back one slide and returning makes the video play for the audience, this isn't a media compatibility problem within PowerPoint as I thought at first, but it's more likely a first-render/video initialization issue in Teams

I have tried reproducing the same behavior on my side, but unfortunately, I can't gather more details or insights about this unexpected situation. I have also checked Microsoft's official documentation and help articles, but this issue is not documented, and no effective solution has been provided to resolve it.

That said, the best next step I would recommend is to reach out to your company's administrator and ask for their help to contact Microsoft Support for further assistance.

You can ask your Global Admin to create a support ticket through:

Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center with an admin account > select Support > Help & Support

Turn off the "Support Assistant" feature.

Use the keyword "Support" to quickly bypass automated suggestions > Select Contact Support.

Try these checks in order:

Restart Teams PowerPoint Live video playback issues in Teams can sometimes be temporary. Fully restart Teams, then start the presentation again.
Check Teams GPU hardware acceleration In Teams > Settings > General, make sure Disable GPU hardware acceleration is not selected. Then restart Teams. If that option is selected, Teams can show “Content not shown in optimal fidelity”, and PowerPoint Live may have issues such as videos not playing.
Update Windows and graphics drivers Out-of-date graphics drivers are a known cause of PowerPoint media problems.
- Install the latest Windows updates.
- Update the graphics driver.
- If the device uses Intel graphics, make sure the driver is updated because older Intel drivers have caused PowerPoint media freezes, hangs, and crashes.
Optimize the presentation media for compatibility In PowerPoint:
- Go to File > Info
- If Optimize Compatibility appears, select it
This can fix media that may not play correctly on another device or in another playback path. Note: this optimization removes embedded subtitles and alternate audio tracks.
Confirm the videos are embedded, not linked In File > Info, if PowerPoint reports linked videos, use View Links and embed them. Linked videos are more likely to fail in shared or remote presentation scenarios.
Re-save older media format content if applicable If any videos were inserted using an earlier PowerPoint version:
- Go to File > Info
- Select Convert
- Then run Optimize Compatibility again
Use the recommended media format Even if the files are already .mp4, the recommended format is:
- .mp4
- H.264 video
- AAC audio
If the files were encoded differently, convert them to that format.
Reduce playback load if videos are large or effects-heavy If playback is inconsistent:
- Compress the media files in the presentation
- Limit heavy visual effects around the video
- Close other programs before presenting

If the problem started only in the last few weeks and the same files used to work, the strongest indicators from the documented issues are Teams GPU acceleration and graphics driver updates.
