Clarification on Initial Credit - ($200 vs $1,000)

Hello ,

I recently completed my account setup and personal identity verification for Microsoft for Startups and received $200 in Azure credits. A colleague/friend of mine signed up through the exact same program page (https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/free/students) and received an initial $1,000 credit grant.

Do you know how it's possible that one of us got $200 and the other got $1,000, even though we signed in through the same page? Has the policy changed recently, is this a bug, or did I sign up in the wrong place?"

Thank you!

The most likely explanation is that two different offers were involved, not a bug.

    • Microsoft for Startups provides an initial $1,000 in Azure credits after account creation/setup.
    • The Azure free account offer provides $200 in credit for the first 30 days.
    • The Azure for Students page is a separate offer path and is not the same as the Microsoft for Startups startup-credit flow.

The startup documentation states that after completing Microsoft for Startups account setup, startups can begin building immediately with $1,000 in starter credits. It also states that in the Azure portal, eligible applicants see confirmation that they have unlocked $1,000 in Azure credits.

So if one account shows $200 and the other shows $1,000, that usually means:

    1. The $200 account was created under an Azure free account offer.
    2. The $1,000 account was created under the Microsoft for Startups offer.
    3. The accounts may have gone through different eligibility or signup paths, even if the page looked similar.

    A few checks:

    1. In the Azure portal, go to Cost Management + Billing to review the billing profile and payment methods.
    2. Confirm whether the account was activated using the same Microsoft Account (MSA) used during Microsoft for Startups registration. Using a work or school account can cause activation issues.
    3. Allow up to 24 hours for the credit balance to fully update after account creation.
    4. If the account was intended to be a Microsoft for Startups account and still only shows $200, submit program support through https://aka.ms/startuphelp-mfs-portal or open an Azure support request through Help + Support in the Azure portal.

This does not indicate a documented policy change in the provided material.
