Unable to Delete Static Web App

I know others are having this issue as well but I just wanted to reach out to the community to see if anyone can suggest a solution that would work.

It all started with trying to add a custom domain. I started the process and it tried to add the custom domain to the DNS records by adding a CNAME record. My DNS is hosted on Azure as well so it should've been a quick and painless process but it got stuck for a long long time and ultimately failed. I don't remember the error message but it didn't work even though the CNAME record got created. I still couldn't reach my static web app site using the custom domain though.

I then tried to delete the custom domain and start over again and this was probably 3 hours ago and it still shows deleting, though it failed a few times and I started the process again. I found some posts on the Internet and some of them suggested removing the CNAME record for the custom domain which I did to no avail.

I then tried deleting the entire static web app and that failed several times -- probably because somewhere in the backend of Azure, the custom domain deletion is probably stuck somewhere. I tried deleting the static web app through the portal as well as Azure CLI and both times it failed after spinning the "in progress" animations for a long long time.

As of now, the static web app is still there though both custom domain and the Production environment show "Deleting". Any suggestions?

Hi Sam

Can you retry deleting your custom domain now? I just retried mine and it successfully deleted after about 2-3 minutes. Previously it had been stuck for many hours.

Below is latest update from the Service issue DZXC-65Z:

Service: Static Web Apps

Region: Global

Event tags: --

Impact Statement: Starting at 14:30 UTC on 11 August 2026, you have been identified as an affected customer using Azure Static Web Apps in multiple regions who may experience failures or delays when deleting custom domains for resources hosted in the region. At this time, the impact is limited to a subset of customers.

Current Status: Our teams have completed mitigation actions and are currently monitoring recovery progress. The issue was attributed to a backlog in the job queue responsible for custom domain deletion operations, which caused deployment requests to time out. Mitigation efforts included reducing the batch size of operations and stopping specific operations to accelerate queue recovery. Current telemetry indicates that the queue backlog is decreasing rapidly and is expected to reach a healthy state shortly.

Initial assessments indicate that custom domain creation and update workflows remain healthy, with the impact limited to delayed or failed custom domain deletion requests while the backlog was present.

We are validating recovery by monitoring system performance and confirming successful retries from affected customers.

The next update will be provided in 02 hours, or as events warrant.

Thanks.

It looks like only the Azure Support can fix this for us, according to this post:

Mine is still stuck since yesterday -- both the custom domain and the "Production" environment still show as "Deleting".

The Microsoft support person @Venkatesan S said they're investigating the issue, but I ask "how"? Do they know my Azure Subscription ID? Sounds like a generic response to pacify paying customers. I hope I'm wrong!
