Excel requiring 365 subscription to save edited file

Have a Home Use Program for Office. It recently updated Excel, Word, & Powerpoint to version 16.111.2.

Now an Office 365 subscription is required to save edits to files, although I did not subscribe before & do not need 365.

Please advise.

Actually, only 1 account lists the Office Home & Student 2021, & that is the account I've signed into to download the License Removal Tool. (The other account was for a different laptop - my poor memory.)

If there are any specific instructions about using the License Removal Tool, please tell me. Otherwise, I will follow the instructions.

    The only sequence of steps that solved the problem was:

    1. Use License Removal Tool (may not have been necessary, but it was a step in the sequence)
    2. Uninstall each Office application (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Teams) using instructions on the support webpage ((https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/lifecycle/officeinstall/uninstall-office-for-mac).
    3. Restart computer.
    4. Download the purchased installation package for Office Home & Student 2021 from my Microsoft account (link is in 'subscriptions").
    5. Install applications using downloaded package.

    Microsoft has released a newer Office update, so please open "Help" > "Check for Updates" and install all available updates first.
