Defender Identity Theft Protection appears to be broken

The initial setup was simple. However, I want to add the rest of the family and additional credit cards to monitor. When I click the Credit monitoring tile on the locally installed App or on the web I get an error stating "Something went wrong. Wait a bit and try later." This happens on Credit monitoring and Dark Web monitoring. It's been this way for at least 5 days. Anyone else having this issue?

Hello @Ron Love

Since the same “Something went wrong. Wait a bit and try later” error occurs in both the Defender app and the web portal, and it has persisted for five days, this is less likely to be a local app/cache issue.

Microsoft still lists Dark Web Monitoring and Credit Monitoring as supported Microsoft Defender for Individuals features, so these services haven't been discontinued.

A few things worth checking:

  • Confirm the Microsoft 365 Personal/Family subscription is active and you're signed into Defender with the account associated with it.
  • Try an InPrivate/Incognito browser session.
  • If adding family members, note that family members over the applicable statutory age must consent before their identity information can be monitored.
  • Credit monitoring is currently available only in the United States and U.S. territories and requires the device's primary display language to be English.

Since both Credit Monitoring and Dark Web Monitoring fail from the app and web, I'd also report this directly from Defender using Profile → Help and feedback. Microsoft specifically recommends this path for problems with Identity Theft Monitoring.

When reporting it, include the screenshot, approximate UTC time of the failure, affected Microsoft account (privately), and mention that the issue reproduces on both the Defender app and web portal.

I wouldn't remove your existing Identity Theft Monitoring profile as a troubleshooting step because Microsoft notes that doing so removes the information you've already provided for monitoring.
