Purview data governance domains

Hi Samy, Governance domain hierarchy should be finalized while domains are still in Draft. In Unified Catalog, a parent domain can be selected during creation, but documented edit options after creation are limited to name, description, owner, and status. I couldn’t find a supported API workaround to re-parent or restructure a published governance domain. Recommended approach: finalize the hierarchy before publishing. If changes are needed later, create the new domain/subdomain structure, reassociate related business concepts where supported, reconfigure roles/mappings/policies, validate, then unpublish and delete the old domain after removing its business concepts and subdomains. If deletion is blocked, check for remaining child domains, data products, glossary terms, mappings, or workflows under the domain.

I agree with Ganesh. In my view, the governance domain hierarchy should be considered a foundational design decision and ideally be finalized with business stakeholders before publication. If the hierarchy needs to change later, I would recommend creating the new structure, reassociating the relevant governance objects, validating the result, and then retiring or deleting the old structure. This seems to be the safest and most supportable approach.
