Windows 11 confirmation dialogs automatically close on multiple PCs when saving, overwriting, pasting, or deleting files

I’m experiencing an unusual issue on Windows 11 where file confirmation dialogs immediately close by themselves.

What makes this issue more concerning is that this is not happening only on my PC. I have reproduced the same behavior on multiple Windows 11 systems, including my friends’ PCs.

The issue occurs across multiple unrelated applications, including:

Cursor

Visual Studio Code

FileZilla

File Explorer

Snipping Tool

Other applications when saving or managing files

For example, when trying to save or overwrite an existing file, the confirmation dialog appears and then immediately disappears before I can select an option.

The same behavior can occur when:

Overwriting an existing file

Pasting/replacing an existing file

Deleting files when confirmation is enabled

Using “Save As” with an existing filename

It feels as though something is automatically triggering No/Cancel or otherwise forcing the confirmation dialog to close.

Troubleshooting already attempted

On my system, I have already tried:

Restarting Windows

Checking for stuck keyboard keys

Testing with the On-Screen Keyboard

Disconnecting/reconnecting external keyboard and mouse devices

Reinstalling keyboard drivers

Uninstalling/reinstalling mouse and pointing-device drivers

Restarting after driver removal

Running antivirus/malware scans

Performing a Windows Clean Boot

Disabling startup applications and non-Microsoft services

The problem sometimes disappears temporarily after restarting or performing some of these troubleshooting steps, but it eventually returns.

However, since the same behavior is also occurring on other Windows 11 PCs, including systems with different hardware and peripherals, I don't think this is simply a faulty keyboard, mouse, or individual application.

I have not yet tested Windows Safe Mode.

Could this be related to a recent Windows 11 update, Windows Explorer/shell component, common Windows service, input handling, or another system-level change?

Has anyone else recently experienced confirmation dialogs automatically closing when saving, overwriting, pasting, or deleting files?

I would especially like to know if this is a known Windows 11 issue and whether there is a way to identify what is causing the dialogs to close automatically.

As of yesterday (11th/08), at my earliest understanding, I am having the same or similar issue.

Renaming a file (example.txt to example.c) brings a confirmation that appears and almost immediately disappears. Code::Blocks says it receives an unexpected error code when trying to add a new file and a windows confirmation appears. (Unfortunately, crashing Code::Blocks, and making it difficult or annoying to continue programming)

Running sfc and dism does not fix the issue. I am running 23H2 22631.6199.

In update history there was; Microsoft Defender Antivirus -113.0 (11th/08)

I have had no other changes to the system that could possibly impact this.

There is theoretically enough time to very quickly press Enter -> Left Arrow -> Enter to confirm the dialog, but a slight mistake or delay will mean the dialog is already closed before you get the chance. This means that the window has enough time to open and exist, but something chokes it after less than a second.

The problem still exists when Microsoft Defender is closed...

I am having the exact same issue. It all started in Figma for me around August 10, 2026. At first, I thought it was just a bug within the app, but I soon noticed it happening in Notepad and other programs as well. Save and confirmation dialog boxes instantly disappear before I can click anything.

I have tried everything—troubleshooting, restarting, and even completely formatting my PC—yet the issue always returns.

@Les Ferch Hi, I tried it in Safe Mode. I saved and overwrote Notepad files on my desktop, and the issue didn't happen at all—everything worked normally without any dialog boxes disappearing. I kept doing it for a few more minutes to make sure the issue wouldn't show up again, and it didn't.

@Genesis That's good to hear. Now it's a matter of finding the app (or driver) that's causing the problem. Easier said than done, but I would start by uninstalling any third-party software that is running all the time. Based on previous experience, and the fact this is affecting a lot of users, I would first suspect Adobe software (if there is any of their stuff installed).

I completed the Safe Mode test requested by Microsoft.

The issue does not occur in Windows Safe Mode. I tested saving/overwriting files and the confirmation dialogs remain open normally.

I also found another interesting behavior:

Normal Windows + Cursor → confirmation dialog closes immediately

Normal Windows + FileZilla → confirmation dialog closes immediately

Running Cursor as Administrator → confirmation dialog stays open

Running FileZilla as Administrator → confirmation dialog stays open

This appears to be a system-level issue rather than a problem with one particular application.

There are also now multiple independent reports in this thread from users experiencing the same behavior around August 10–12, 2026, including reports affecting multiple PCs and different Windows versions.

At this point, I think it would be useful to investigate whether there is a common Windows component, security component, driver, service, or recent update involved.

I am also comparing Windows builds and Windows Update/Defender versions between affected machines.

Has Microsoft been able to reproduce this internally?

If there is an official investigation or known issue being tracked, I would appreciate the incident/KB reference so affected users can follow it.

I'm able to launch into safe-mode and get the system to work properly, waiting 10 minutes with a confirmation box open does not trigger the issue. However, when going back to normal, it takes (roughly) 54 seconds to occur.

(My tests are basic, it just consists of renaming a text file to 't.c' and keeping the confirmation box open until it closes again.)

My system is;

ACER AV-14 laptop, i7-1255U, 16GB.I've disabled all of my startup programs, but 50-60 seconds after starting, the same thing always happens.

Hello, just got this issue on a few clients and found out the culprit after shutting down some processes. It came down to wpscloudsvr.exe which is a component of WPS Office. On the Task Manager I believe it comes as "WPS Office service program for service such as login and cloud storage".

Close it and all other WPS processes and the issue will go away.

Now you can either rename the EXE to anything else to make sure the process doesn't start up with the software or uninstall WPS Office. The EXE should be under C:\Users[Username]\AppData\Local\Kingsoft\WPS Office\12.1.0.28032\office6\wpscloudsvr.exe

Microsoft and WPS really need to test their updates together more carefully. This update combination creates an incredibly frustrating user experience. Once the bug occurs, every confirmation prompt on Windows 11 exhibits the exact same behavior, severely affecting other third-party applications as well as Windows 11's own system prompts (such as Administrator permission requests for folder access).

It worked when I run the software as administrator, tried it with filezilla, cursor. Now the dialogue stays until you respond.

I have the same issue since last August security update. I have successfully found the root cause of this bug! The issue is a direct conflict between the Windows August security update and WPS Office. WPS installs its background services per-user. Uninstalling WPS Office completely fixes the Save As prompt crash on multiple devices (tested on both Windows 11 23H2 and 25H2). Reinstalling WPS instantly reproduces the exact same bug.

I have an update regarding this issue. Thanks to the insights shared by @Nihal Ahmed Nariyam , we were able to pinpoint the root cause, which is tied to the WPS application.

Specifically, when I open Task Manager and end task on the background process highlighted in the red box below, the problem is completely solved

I understand why this is concerning, especially since the confirmation window closes before you can make a selection and you have reproduced the behavior on several PCs.

I could not confirm from Microsoft’s published Windows 11 known-issue information that this exact confirmation-dialog behavior is currently listed as a known issue.

Please try these next steps:

Option 1: Test in Safe Mode

Open Settings > System > Recovery. Beside Advanced startup, select Restart now. Then select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, and press 4 for Safe Mode.
Try replacing or deleting a temporary test file. If the dialog remains open in Safe Mode, that points toward software, a service, or another component that loads only during normal startup. Windows startup settings

Option 2: Repair Windows system components

Open “Terminal (Admin)”, then run these commands one at a time:
- DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- sfc /scannow

Option 3: Check the exact build and update correlation

Press Windows key + R, enter winver, and note the Windows version and OS build on every affected computer. Also check Settings > Windows Update > Update history to see whether the PCs share the same recently installed update.

I got the same issue on 5 PCs on a specific domain. Running the program in Admin mode helps, but blocks saving files in the network. Both W10 and W11. Safe Mode test got mixed results, 3 worked and 2 didn't
