primary email account and others

I changed my primary email account because I couldnt get teams to work and thought it might be because I had a google account as primary

Just so you are aware, Microsoft have recently changed the primary alias for the Microsoft accounts. They now state the following:

If you change your primary username, it will be removed and you cannot add it back, send or receive from that email.

This banner is shown on the top of the Microsoft account alias page

The reason why I wanted to point this out is because this may explain why you are unable to add your Gmail alias back, even if it is being added as a username. However, just to be sure, please can you sign into your Microsoft account here: https://account.live.com/names/manage

Once you have signed into your Microsoft account, please can you click onto "Add email" under your account username and/or phone number.

Please can you try adding the Gmail account back as an existing email address. Does this allow you to add the Gmail address back onto your Microsoft account?

do I need to have it as an alias?

You don't need to have it as an alias. You can change your Microsoft account's alias at anytime. However, when doing so, you would need to inform your contacts of this change and update any sites/communication preferences who will be emailing you on the former account alias. This is because, when they send an email, they will get a message telling them that the email doesn't exist.

However, in your case, it is worth noting that this is a Gmail address, and most likely still active. Thus, emails would be going to that Gmail address rather then the Microsoft account. Although, I could be mistaken. It may be worth sending a test email to your Gmail address to see if it goes through.

I can now issue invites but when the invite arrives my client cannot click on link it just doesnt work

So that I can help you with this, please can you answer the following questions:

1. When the user clicks onto the link, what happens?
2. Does the user get an error message (If so, what is the error message they get)?

I am using personal MSOffice and wondering whether I should have got business as teams just doesnt seem to work for me at all

This depends on what you are wanting to do on Microsoft Teams. Teams free is good for communities, parish councils and small organisations who may not want to folk out for business versions of Teams. Depending on your usage and what you are aiming to do, Teams free may be ideal for you.

Thanks for answering my questions about what happens with Microsoft Teams.

heres a few screen shots of it not working - the message was received but links dont work - I tried copy and pasting and emailing instead similar problem

When looking at the screenshot provided, Gmail has marked the email as SPAM. When an email has been marked as SPAM, by default the links will not work. This is to help prevent people from accidently clicking onto links that could potentially harm them or their device.

Please can you click onto "Report not spam" in the grey box above, under the learn more hyperlink.

This will report this back to Google as not SPAM, which will update it's SPAM detection algorithms. The email should be moved to your Inbox, and the link should work as normal.

With this being said, it may be worth asking your clients to check whether any invitations have been sent to Junk by mistake. This is what other organisations do as this can happen to organisations too, especially if someone has previously marked the email as SPAM before. I know in your case, this may not be the case, but just wanted to provide context that may help you in the future.
