I had a PC running windows 10 pro. I recently replaced the motherboard, and this triggered that I needed to activate windows again. I couldn't locate the product key (it's been 10 years and I've moved three times).

So thought I'd go ahead and update to windows 11 home, I don't need the pro features. So I bought a digital copy off the MS store, got the confirmation email with product key and downloaded the update software.

It updated to windows 11 pro instead of home. It won't accept the windows home product key. It also won't let me get to the update from home to pro option - the store is forcing me to buy another product key for $200.

All I want to do is either return the useless home edition, or pay only $50 for the upgrade to Pro.

Hello trapine,

The Windows 11 Home key cannot activate the currently installed Windows 11 Pro edition.

Option 1: You can try recovering the previous Pro activation. This can work if the previous Pro digital license was linked to that Microsoft account and is transferable. An OEM license originally supplied with the old motherboard normally may not transfer.

  • Open Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot.
  • Select "I changed hardware on this device recently".
  • Sign in with the Microsoft account previously associated with the Windows 10 Pro license.
  • Select the old device and choose Activate.

Option 2: If Pro cannot be reactivated, you can use the Windows 11 Home key by installing Windows 11 Home:

  • Back up all personal files.
  • Create a bootable USB using Microsoft’s Windows 11 installation media guide:

  • Boot the PC from that USB and select Install Windows 11.
  • When prompted, enter the purchased Windows 11 Home key. This should make Setup install the matching Home image.
  • If Setup instead displays Select Image, choose Windows 11 Home.
  • Complete the custom installation and activate Windows after connecting to the internet.

Microsoft classifies moving from Pro to Home as an edition downgrade, so entering the Home key through Command Prompt while Pro remains installed will not perform the required edition change.

    Hi trapine,

    Since you have a genuine Windows 11 Home product key, you can activate or switch keys using this method:

    Run Command Prompt as administrator, then run:

    slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

    Replace XXXXX with your actual product key

    Then run:

    slmgr /ato

    If all else fails to switch product keys, you may need to reinstall Windows 11 Home using an ISO. During the setup, enter your product key when prompted.
