I'm unable to change my legacy xboxlivefamily email to an actual useable email.

My Microsoft account was created years ago using an old @xboxlivefamily alias from one of Microsoft/Xbox’s promotions. Unfortunately, that alias can’t send or receive email, and it has been causing problems with my account.

I’m trying to remove the Xbox Live Family alias and make my other email address the primary alias, but I don’t appear to have the option to do so.

On the Sign-in preferences page, I can see:

The Xbox Live Family alias, which is currently listed as Primary

Another email address, which I want to make my primary alias

My phone number

I have the option to remove the other email address and phone number, but there is no option to remove or change the Xbox Live Family alias (it's greyed out). Instead, I receive the message:

“Your organization’s policies prevent you from changing your primary username.”

I also found another user who had the same issue with an old Xbox Live Family alias. They said Microsoft Support was able to delete the email, which resolved the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Before we proceed, may I know the option you see in the Sign-in preferences menu? Do you see any options to edit the primary email? Recently, I've seen reports that the Make primary button has been removed, so can you try to see if you can remove the intended alias and then use the edit button to make it the primary email instead?

If you want to contact Microsoft Support, you can try to use this method.

Type Live chat in the search box.
Now click Get help, and Select Contact Support or Sign in to contact support below.
Go to the Products and services tab, and choose Other products
On the Category tab, choose Billing and Account Profile questions
Go to Confirm.
You can now choose the option of Chat with a support agent on your web browser.

For legacy @xboxlivefamily.com accounts, the primary alias can be restricted and show “Your organization’s policies prevent you from changing your primary username.” In that case, changing or removing that primary alias is often not available in self-service.

What is supported:

Try adding a usable alias if it is not already present:
- Sign in to Manage how you sign in to Microsoft.
- Select Add email.
- Add an existing email address or create a new Outlook.com address.
- Verify the new alias.
If the option is available, try to make that alias primary:
- On Manage how you sign in to Microsoft, select Make primary next to the usable email address.
If Make primary is unavailable or the Xbox Live Family alias remains locked/greyed out, that matches the documented limitation for some legacy Xbox Live Family accounts.
In that situation, the practical workaround is:
- Keep the legacy alias attached.
- Use the added email alias to sign in, if sign-in is allowed for that alias.
- Check Your info > Sign-in preferences and ensure the usable alias is allowed for sign-in.
Important removal warning:
- If an alias uses a Microsoft domain such as @hotmail.com, @live.com, @outlook.com, or @msn.com, removing it permanently deletes that alias and it cannot be associated with a Microsoft account again.
- A non-Microsoft-domain email alias usually becomes available to add to another Microsoft account after removal.

For this specific @xboxlivefamily.com scenario, the available context indicates these legacy accounts can remain restricted from changing the primary alias. If the account already has another alias, the supported path is to use that alias for sign-in and communications where possible; full removal or replacement of the legacy primary alias may not be available through account settings.
