Windows activation for retail license

Back in 2012, I purchase Windows 8 Pro retail license from Microsoft. I used it on my laptop which was shipped with Vista. Vista crashed and I replaced Vista with Windows 8 Pro. After that I upgraded the laptop to Windows 10 Pro. Now the laptop is 18 years old. It gives me option for Windows 11 Pro upgrade, but the hardware is not supporting. I have recently built a new PC. I want to utilize the same Pro license on the new PC. The old laptop is not being used. When I tried to activate the retail license on the new PC, it is not working.

    If your Windows 8 Pro license was purchased as a retail license, it can generally be transferred to a new PC, provided it is no longer in use on the old device.  

    To better understand why activation is failing, could you confirm: 

    • Is the new PC running Windows 11 Pro or Windows 11 Home? 
    • Are you activating with the original Windows 8 Pro product key, or was the license previously linked to your Microsoft account? 
    • What is the exact activation error code or message shown in Settings > System > Activation? 

    As an initial check, please open Command Prompt as Administrator and run: slmgr /dli 

    Then let me know whether the license channel is reported as Retail or OEM.
