We would like to understand whether the following behavior is expected and if there is any official documentation covering it.

We are using Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat and have tested with both the Claude Opus model and the GPT-based models available in Copilot. The Copilot responses are successfully grounded in SharePoint content and can identify the correct document when answering questions.

However, when we ask Copilot a follow-up question such as:

"Can you give me a link to this document in the SharePoint site?" "What is the file path of this document?" "Can you provide the SharePoint URL for this file?"

Copilot is often unable to provide the exact SharePoint URL, document link, or file path, even though it appears to have used that document as a source for the answer.

Could you please clarify:

Is this expected behavior in Microsoft 365 Copilot?
Is there a security or design limitation that prevents Copilot from returning the exact SharePoint URL or file path?
Are there any settings, permissions, or configurations required to enable Copilot to provide document URLs and paths?
Is this behavior the same across all supported models (GPT and Claude)?
Is there any official Microsoft documentation that explains this limitation or expected behavior?

Explains whether Microsoft 365 Copilot is expected to return the exact SharePoint URL or file path of a grounded document.

The documented behavior supports only a partial confirmation.

What is supported by the available documentation:

Copilot uses SharePoint content only within the user’s existing permissions. Microsoft documents that SharePoint-based Copilot experiences use the signed-in user’s credentials and security trimming, so users only get answers from content they already have access to.
Some Copilot experiences can return links to SharePoint documents. In Dynamics 365 Sales Copilot, when an answer is found in SharePoint, Copilot summarizes the answer and provides links to the corresponding documents in SharePoint.
There are known limitations around how SharePoint links are rendered in some Copilot scenarios. In Copilot Studio, Microsoft Q&A documents a known issue where file links in the References section may not render correctly when filenames contain spaces. That issue affects link display, not retrieval of the content.
For agent knowledge sources, SharePoint is added at site or library root scope, not single-file scope.
