The process of building custom applications and tools that interact with Microsoft SharePoint, including SharePoint Online in Microsoft 365.
Hello Zyrka,
Thank you for raising this question.
After reviewing the available Microsoft Learn and Microsoft Support documentation, I did not come across any article that specifically:
- Explains whether Microsoft 365 Copilot is expected to return the exact SharePoint URL or file path of a grounded document.
- Describes a supported capability or known limitation related to SharePoint URL/path retrieval.
- Identifies a tenant setting, permission, or configuration that enables this behavior.
- Compares this behavior across supported models such as GPT and Claude.
Based on the documentation that is currently available:
- Copilot can use organizational content, including SharePoint files, as grounding data when generating responses.
- Copilot Chat responses include citations and provide a Sources experience that shows the content used to generate the response.
- Users can review and open referenced files through the Sources pane in Copilot Chat.
For reference:
Control and review sources of Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat's responses | Microsoft Support
How does Microsoft 365 Copilot work? | Microsoft Learn
Show citations with response semantics in Copilot MCP connectors and agents | Microsoft Learn
Therefore, while Copilot can identify and reference SharePoint documents as sources, it seems that returning the exact SharePoint URL or file path is not currently a documented capability. Based on the information available today, this behavior appears to be expected rather than the result of a configuration issue.
I hope the information I was somewhat helpful in addressing your concern. If you have any further questions or updates, please don’t hesitate to share.
