I have spent hours and hours trying to get into PowerPoint that isn’t read only. I have paid £84 for Microsoft and feel VERY cheated and frustrated that I can’t get any answers for this. I have restarted the computer so many. I have updated my MacBook Air etc. can anybody help me

Hi Carole,

I’m really sorry this has been so frustrating, especially after paying for Microsoft 365 and spending hours trying to fix it.

It sounds like PowerPoint may still be using the old Royal British Legion license instead of your personal subscription. First, please sign in to your Microsoft account’s Services & subscriptions page and confirm that the Microsoft 365 subscription you paid for is listed there.

If it is listed, I recommend using Microsoft’s official Office License Removal Tool for Mac. This removes the old license information from the Mac so that Office can be activated again with the correct personal account.

Note: The license removal tool only clears saved activation/licensing data on your Mac, it does not delete your purchase or invalidate your license. However, please make sure you still have access to the correct Microsoft account associated with your original Office purchase, as you will need to sign in again to reactivate it after running the tool.

After the tool finishes, open PowerPoint and sign in with that personal account.

If the subscription is missing, or PowerPoint remains read-only after reactivation, please contact Microsoft Support so they can check the purchase and license association. Since this is a user-to-user forum, we cannot access your account or billing records, we can only provide general troubleshooting guidance based on the information you share here.

I can’t thank you enough for helping. I have just checked and Microsoft haven’t taken the money it is still pending. So I assume the license hasn’t been activated.

Dear Carole,

Thank you for your update. That may explain why PowerPoint is still read-only.

Please check that your card and billing details are correct under Services & subscriptions > Manage in your Microsoft account, then contact your bank to confirm whether the pending payment needs approval.

If everything is correct but the payment remains pending, please post back and we'll look into it further.

Please note that a personal email address alone will not enable editing unless that account has an active Microsoft 365 subscription or Office license.

Could you please confirm:

Do you have an active Microsoft 365 subscription or one-time-purchase Office license under your personal Microsoft account?
When you select the Royal British Legion account, is there a Sign out, Switch account, or Remove account option?
Can you edit a newly created blank presentation, or is everything read-only?
Is the presentation saved on your computer, personal OneDrive, or the Royal British Legion’s OneDrive/SharePoint?

Can’t see Account under File.

Note that File > Account only exists in the Windows version of PowerPoint.

Carole Williams, thank you for clarifying. On a Mac, you may not see Account under the File menu.

Please open PowerPoint, then select PowerPoint in the menu bar at the very top of your Mac screen. Do you see Sign Out there?
