Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
That message usually means the account is temporarily blocked because Microsoft detected multiple failed sign-in attempts or unusual sign-in activity, even if the password being entered is correct.
Recommended steps:
- Stop repeated sign-in attempts for at least 24 hours. Repeated retries can keep the temporary block active.
- Use the Microsoft Sign-in Helper. It checks the account and guides the next recovery step.
- If the password is correct but no longer works, use Recover your account and complete the security code flow again:
- Enter the email address, phone number, or Skype name for the account.
- Choose where to receive the security code.
- Enter the code in Verify your identity.
- Set a new password.
- If the verification code is being sent but is reported as wrong, try another verification method if one is available, or wait until access to the listed recovery method is stable. Microsoft support agents cannot send verification codes or change account details for security reasons.
- If the username is not recognized or the account still will not sign in after recovery attempts, use Contact support and tell the support advocate that the username or password has stopped working.
For the contact path:
- Use Contact Microsoft Support, enter the problem, select Get Help, and then select Contact Support.
- If the issue is specifically that the account credentials stopped working, use the Contact support option on the Microsoft account recovery page.
Important checks before retrying:
- Confirm the Hotmail address is typed exactly right, including the correct domain such as .com.
- If a different alias or phone number is attached to the account, try that sign-in option.
- If the account has not been signed in to for more than two years, it may have been deleted.
