Office being updated is important but the most important step is to confirm that the version of macOS is fully updated. All disk management operations are owned by the OS. Additionally, run the Apple Disk Utility - First Aid routine on the startup volume. See this Apple KB if you need directions: Disk Utility

Other considerations include:

  • The location you're attempting to save to,
  • Whether a variety of other programs are running, &
  • Any Add-Ins or background operations may be interfering with the Save operation.

On Mac, this save failure can happen even when plenty of storage is available because Office creates a temporary file during save or autosave, and an environmental interruption can break that process.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Update Office for Mac
      • Open Word.
      • Select Help > Check for Updates.
      • Set updates to Automatically if available.
      • Select Check for Updates and install the latest update.
    2. Test saving a new file
      • Create a new blank Word document.
      • Try saving it to a simple local location such as the Desktop.
      • If that works, the issue may be related to the original file rather than Word itself.
    3. Copy content into a new document
      • Open the affected document.
      • Copy all content.
      • Paste it into a new Word document.
      • Try saving the new document.
    4. Restart the Mac and try again
      • A restart can clear temporary conditions that interrupt the save process.
    5. If the problem affects Excel too, check for common save blockers
      • Antivirus software can interrupt the save process. Temporarily disable it and test saving again.
      • If saving to an external or network location, save to an alternative local drive location first.

If the issue continues after updating Office and testing with a new local file, contact support.
