Visio Error Message at startup - We're sorry but Vision has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly.

If I select repair now, it pauses for 30 seconds, then closes. I have tried rebooting my machine.

Not sure if this is relevant, but I noticed in the top left that it says it's an unlicensed product. I got a license (through my employer in December 2025) and renewed it in June 2026.

I renewed my subscription through my employer in June 2026. I've never noticed it say "unlicensed product" before today. Since it's the weekend, our IT helpdesk is closed.

I tried everything you suggested, including Safe Mode. I will revisit on Monday when everyone is back.

    Thank you for your help.

    Hi @Pearson, Andrew J

To better assist you, could you please let me know if your Visio license assignment has changed recently, or if you have signed in with a different account than usual?

From your description, I understand that the built-in Repair Now feature has not resolved the issue with Microsoft Visio and instead causes the application to close unexpectedly when the repair process is initiated.

You could try to follow these steps to troubleshoot it:

    Perform a Manual Online Repair

Since the standard repair option was unsuccessful, I recommend running a full Online Repair to verify and replace any corrupted installation files.

Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed Apps, locate your Microsoft Visio (or your Microsoft 365 installation), select the three-dot menu, and choose Modify. Select Online Repair, then click Repair. Please note that this process requires a stable internet connection and may take several minutes to complete.

You can refer via: Repair an Office application

    Launch Visio in Safe Mode

If the issue persists, it may be caused by a conflicting add-in. To isolate the issue, press Windows + R to open the Run dialog box, input visio /safe (please notice the space) and press Enter. If Visio launches successfully in Safe Mode, navigate to File > Options > Add-ins and disable any third-party add-ins that may be contributing to the instability. This will help determine whether an add-in is causing the application to crash or behave unexpectedly.

    Reset Visio User Profile Settings

Corrupted user settings can sometimes cause startup failures. Close Visio, then press Windows + R, type regedit, and press Enter. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Visio. Rename the Visio key, for example to Visio_old, and then reopen Visio. This will force the application to recreate a fresh set of user settings.

    Update Microsoft Office

Some Visio issues may be related to a specific Office build. To ensure you are running the latest version, open any Office application such as Word or Excel, go to File > Account, and under Office Updates, select Update Options > Update Now.

Note: Although these repair procedures are designed to preserve your data, I recommend backing up or synchronizing all .vsdx files to a cloud service or local storage before proceeding.

I hope that these steps will restore full functionality to your Visio application. Please do not hesitate to reach out if further assistance is required.
