Using Classic Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
This Outlook error is commonly caused by one of these Gmail sign-in problems in classic Outlook:
- During the Google browser sign-in, the permission box was not checked for: “Read, compose, send, and permanently delete all your email from Gmail.”
- Outlook is not prompting properly to refresh the Gmail sign-in.
- Gmail IMAP is not enabled for the account.
Try these steps in order:
- In classic Outlook, if the error window shows a Retry link, select it.
- This is the current fix for Outlook for Microsoft 365 starting with Current Channel Version 2412 Build 18324.20168.
- When the Google sign-in page appears, make sure the permission for Microsoft apps and services to access Gmail is checked.
- If Outlook shows that the account needs attention but the browser sign-in does not react, update Outlook to a build that includes the Gmail sign-in fix.
- The sign-in fix was released in these builds:
- Current Channel: Version 2404 (Build 17531.10000)
- Monthly Enterprise Channel: Version 2407 (Build 17727.10000)
- In Outlook, go to File > Office Account > Update Options > Update Now.
- The sign-in fix was released in these builds:
- If the Gmail account still will not sync and shows 0x800CCC0E, force Outlook to prompt for sign-in again:
- Close Outlook.
- Open Credential Manager from the Windows Start menu.
- Select Windows Credentials.
- Under Generic credentials, find entries starting with MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2.
- Remove the entries for the Gmail account, including those showing tp_google_imap_Oauth2.
- Restart Outlook and sign in to Gmail again.
- If syncing does not resume immediately, restart Outlook one more time.
- If that still does not work, remove the Gmail identity key from the Outlook identity store.
- Warning: editing the registry is risky. Delete only the identity key for the affected Gmail account.
- Close Outlook.
- Right-click Start > Run, type regedit, and select OK.
- Go to:
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity\Identities - Select each subkey until the one matching the Gmail address is found.
- Delete only that identity key.
- Restart Outlook and sign in again.
- If the error appears while adding the Gmail account, also check whether IMAP is enabled in Gmail. Microsoft notes that the same setup error can occur if IMAP is not enabled.
If the yellow bar says Google access is being denied, the most likely cause is that the Google permission checkbox was missed during sign-in. The fix is to repeat the browser sign-in and allow the Gmail access permission.
