To upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11:
- Check that the PC is eligible:
- The device must be running a currently supported version of Windows 10.
- For direct upgrade through Windows Update, Windows 10 version 2004 or later is required.
- Run the PC Health Check app and select Check now to confirm compatibility.
- Back up important files before starting. The upgrade is designed to keep files, apps, and settings, but a backup is still recommended.
- Try the standard upgrade path:
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- If the PC is eligible, look for the Upgrade to Windows 11 offer and select Download and install.
- If Windows 11 is not offered in Windows Update, use one of these methods:
- Windows 11 Installation Assistant: download the tool from Microsoft, run it as administrator, and follow the prompts.
- Installation media / ISO: create Windows 11 installation media, then in Windows 10 run setup.exe from the media or mounted ISO. Choose Keep personal files and apps if the goal is to retain data.
- During installation, the PC will restart several times.
Common blockers:
- TPM 2.0 not detected: enable TPM/PTT/fTPM in BIOS/UEFI.
- Secure Boot disabled: switch to UEFI mode and enable Secure Boot in BIOS/UEFI.
- Not enough storage: free space with Disk Cleanup, remove temporary files, and uninstall unused apps.
By default, files and data are moved to the new Windows 11 installation, and most software and accessories that worked with Windows 10 are expected to work with Windows 11.
