Unable to upgrade Microsoft 365 Business Basic to Business Standard or purchase a new licence

Hello,

I currently have a Microsoft 365 Business Basic (no Teams) subscription and need to upgrade to Microsoft 365 Business Standard so that I can use the desktop Microsoft applications, including Outlook for Mac.

However, whenever I attempt to upgrade the existing subscription, the Microsoft 365 Admin Centre produces an error and will not allow me to complete the purchase.

"Sorry, there was an error processing your request. Please try again later."

Microsoft Support suggested that I purchase a separate Business Standard subscription, assign the new licences to my users and then cancel the existing Business Basic subscription. However, I cannot purchase the new Business Standard subscription separately either, as the purchase process also fails.

To clarify:

  • My existing Business Basic subscription is active.
  • Payments for the existing subscription appear to be processing successfully.
  • I cannot upgrade from Business Basic to Business Standard.
  • I cannot purchase Business Standard as a separate new subscription.
  • I do not want to cancel my existing licences first and risk losing access to emails, mailboxes or company services.
  • I have contacted Microsoft Support several times, but the issue has not yet been resolved.

Has anyone experienced this issue before?

Is there another way to purchase or manually upgrade the licences without cancelling the existing subscription first? Can Microsoft Support process the licence change manually from their side?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi @Jack Bridge,

Based on what you've described, this sounds more like a billing or subscription provisioning issue on the Microsoft 365 tenant side. Since you're unable to both upgrade the existing subscription and purchase a new one, I believe this is something that needs to be investigated by Microsoft Support, as they have the necessary tools and access to identify and resolve the issue efficiently.

I would not recommend cancelling your existing Business Basic subscription first, as doing so could potentially cause service disruption and create unnecessary risk for your users.

You mentioned that you've contacted Microsoft Support several times but the issue has not yet been resolved. May I ask which support channel you've been using (phone, chat, support ticket)?

If you haven't already done so, I believe the best next step is to open a support ticket directly from the Microsoft 365 Admin Center > Help & Support.

    User's image User's image

Tips: You can switch off the Support Assistant as shown in the screenshot, then type a few short characters into the search box and select Get Help. After that, wait for the Contact Support button to appear and click it. At the final step, be sure to clearly describe your request in the description fields so the support engineers can quickly understand your issue and assist you more effectively.

Once the ticket is created, a Microsoft support engineer can investigate the issue from the backend using tools and permissions that are not available to community members here. This allows them to identify the root cause and provide the most appropriate resolution.

If you've already created a support ticket but haven't received a response yet, or if the case doesn't seem to be moving forward, please let me know. I'll be happy to help explore other options and provide further guidance within the scope.

    Looking forward to your response.
