For Office on Mac showing View Only Mode and error 0x0 during activation, use this order:
- Confirm the correct account is being used
- Sign out of PowerPoint or Word.
- Sign back in with the account that actually has the Microsoft 365 license.
- If needed, choose Sign in with another account.
- For a school account, the license may need to be assigned by the organization’s administrator.
- Verify the license exists on the account
- For a personal Microsoft account, check https://account.microsoft.com/services.
- If no Office or Microsoft 365 license appears there, that account will not activate Office.
- If this is a work or school subscription, the license may need to be checked or assigned by the school IT administrator.
- If Office was already activated before, reset the Mac activation credentials
- Open Spotlight Search and launch Keychain Access.
- Delete these items if present:
-
Microsoft Office Identities Cache 3 -
Microsoft Office Identities Settings 3 -
Microsoft Office Ticket Cache
-
- Restart the Mac.
- Open Word or PowerPoint and try activation again.
- Note: deleting Keychain items requires local admin privileges.
- Run the Office license reset tool on Mac
- Run the License Removal Tool.
- After it finishes, restart the Mac.
- Open any Microsoft 365 app and sign in again to reactivate.
- If the Mac is on a supported macOS version, update Office
- For macOS above version 14, Microsoft recommends using the update method for the 0x0 / license not found issue.
- If the account is an education account and still fails
- This commonly means the school account either is not the licensed account or the education license has not been assigned correctly.
- In that case, the school’s Microsoft 365 administrator or IT support needs to verify the license assignment.
If the apps were activated already and only keep prompting, quitting the app completely and reopening it can sometimes clear the prompt. If it keeps returning, use the Keychain cleanup and license removal steps above.
