Accessing Microsoft Teams for Education using school or organizational credentials
If this is a school or work account, the fastest recovery path depends on what access is still available:
- If the password is still known and at least one sign-in or verification method still works
- Open the Advanced security options page for the account.
- Select Add a new way to sign in or verify.
- Confirm the new method with the security code.
- Remove the old phone or verification method that is no longer available.
- Do not change all security info at once. That can restrict the account for 30 days.
- If the password is known but none of the old security methods are accessible
- Start signing in to the school account.
- At Verify your identity, select I don't have any of these.
- Follow the prompts to replace the security info.
- After replacement, there is a 30-day wait before sign-in is allowed.
- If the phone was lost or broken and Microsoft Authenticator was used for MFA
- Try signing in with a different method if one is available.
- If no other method is available, contact the school IT help desk or Microsoft 365 admin and ask them to reset MFA / require re-registration of MFA so Authenticator can be set up again on a new device.
- After the reset, the next sign-in should prompt for MFA setup again.
- If Microsoft Authenticator backup was enabled
- Authenticator credentials can be restored only on the same device type.
- For work or school accounts, only the account name is restored. Sign-in is still required again after restore.
- If the password is also forgotten
- For a work or school account, use the work or school password reset path if self-service password reset is allowed, or contact the school IT admin.
