For rewrite in Word, use this path first:
- Select the text.
- In the left margin next to the text, select the Copilot icon.
- Select Auto Rewrite.
- Review the rewritten options.
- Use Replace, Insert below, or Regenerate.
If the rewrite area is blank, use the built-in alternate flow for Word with keyboard access:
- Select the text.
- Press Alt+I.
- Select Rewrite with Copilot.
- Review the suggestions.
- If needed, use Regenerate to generate a new response.
- Choose Replace or Insert below.
If the Copilot icon itself is missing in Word, these steps are documented in a matching support case:
- Reinstall Microsoft 365 so Word has the latest Copilot-integrated build.
- In Word, go to File > Account > Account Privacy > Manage Settings.
- Make sure these are enabled:
- Experiences that analyze your content
- All connected experiences
- Restart Word and test rewrite again.
If the issue is in OneNote instead of Word, use the Copilot pane flow:
- Select the text.
- Open the Copilot pane from the ribbon, or press Alt+H+F+X with a screen reader workflow.
- Enter a prompt such as Rewrite and specify how the text should change.
- Send the prompt.
- Copy the rewritten result from the Copilot pane and paste it back into the note.
