can't access older laptop

I have an older laptop that I would like to give to my youngest child but I can't remember the password, and everytime I try to reset the laptop it won't allow me to boot up in safe mode with prompt or safe mode. What can be done?

    Hi Larry Bartlet

    I understand you would like to give the laptop to your child, but you're unable to access it because the password has been forgotten.

    Before suggesting the most appropriate recovery method, could you let me know which version of Windows is installed on the laptop (Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 7, or another version)?

    In the meantime, if you do not need to keep any files stored on the device, you can try the following:

    1. Power on the laptop and attempt to enter the Windows Recovery Environment by interrupting the startup process three times in a row (hold the power button when Windows begins loading).
    2. Select "Troubleshoot" > "Reset this PC".
    3. Choose "Remove everything" if you want to completely erase the device before giving it away.

    Warning: This will permanently delete all personal files, applications, and settings from the laptop.
