We are currently undertaking a Microsoft 365 Copilot readiness assessment and are relying on the Microsoft Purview Data Risk Assessment report as a critical input into our security review and remediation activities.
The assessment was initiated successfully; however, the report has failed to generate and the expected completion date continues to move forward automatically.
Observed timeline:
Original expected completion date: 18 July 2026
Updated expected completion date: 25 July 2026
Current expected completion date: 1 August 2026
The assessment remains in a processing state and no report has been produced.
We are concerned that the report generation process may be stalled or encountering a backend issue.
Business Impact
The report is required to:
Assess organizational data exposure risks
Review oversharing risks across SharePoint, Teams, and OneDrive
Support Microsoft 365 Copilot deployment readiness activities
Develop remediation recommendations and governance controls
The inability to generate this report is delaying our security assessment and implementation planning activities.
Request
Could Microsoft Support please:
Confirm whether the assessment is progressing normally.
Investigate whether the assessment is stuck or has failed in the backend.
Confirm if there are any known service issues affecting DSPM Data Risk Assessments.
Advise whether the assessment should be restarted.
Provide an estimated path forward to obtain the report.

Issue Summary: • The assessment is configured as a Site-level assessment. • The assessment targets OneDrive locations for all users. • Although the assessment was created successfully, its status remains at Created, and no scanning activity has started. • The remediation progress indicates that no folders or items have been scanned: o Total folders scanned: 0 o Total items scanned: 0 o Progress: 0% • We also noted that, although this feature is currently in Preview, our internal validation tenant begins displaying item counts while the assessment is in the In Progress state. This behavior differs from what is observed in your environment.
Next Actions: Based on our analysis of the logs and the assessment details you shared, we have engaged our Product Group (PG) for further investigation to determine why the assessment is not progressing beyond the initial state. At this time, we are awaiting feedback from the Product Group. We will keep you informed as soon as we receive an update or if any additional information is required to assist with the investigation.

2026-07-30T01:19:27.2066667+00:00 Lin Xie, might be worth checking whether any custom data risk assessments have started to progress (I assume you have raised a ticket with Microsoft). I checked the ones I had created that were stalled and they now seem to be processing sites. The create date for them has changed to yesterday (29/7) so something has happened.

2026-07-31T02:51:38.62+00:00 Hi Michael. My one is still in progress ("The results will be ready on 1 Aug 2026.") but now I can see the status update. "In progress(1,832 sources completed)". It was 1332 yesterday. I will wait till the weekend.

Good sign 1,332 to 1,832 sources means the backend is actively processing now, not stalled. This matches Michael's tenants, which started moving on 29 July and completed after Microsoft's intervention.
Don't restart it that would reset the source count and lose the progress you've made. Track it by source count rather than the expected completion date; the date just auto-rolls forward and isn't a reliable signal.
Your support case with PG engaged is the right channel for anything further.
Also, best to avoid posting tenant names publicly share those through the support case instead.

Good to hear it completed and the ticket's closed. That lines up with what Michael saw too, so it looks like the same backend fix cleared both tenants.
One thing for next time: track these by source count rather than the expected completion date, since the date just rolls forward on its own and isn't a reliable signal. And if you create custom assessments later, give them time before assuming they're stuck.
