Hi,

I'm trying to enable Alphanumeric Sender ID for SMS on my Azure Communication Services resource, but I'm getting the following message:

"Alphanumeric Sender ID service is currently only available for specific countries and subscription types. Please view this document to select the country/region where you wish to enable alphanumeric sender ID."

My setup:

Subscription type: Azure Free Trial ($200 credit)
Billing address country: Germany
ACS resource region: Germany West Central

What I've checked so far:

My country Germany appears to support [Dynamic / Preregistered] Alphanumeric Sender ID per the Sender Type Availability table.
I understand this feature requires a paid subscription type (e.g. Pay-As-You-Go or Modern Customer Agreement) rather than a trial subscription.

My questions:

Can you confirm that Alphanumeric Sender ID is not available on free trial subscriptions regardless of country eligibility?
If I upgrade to Pay-As-You-Go, will the "Enable Alphanumeric Sender ID" button become active immediately, or does it still require manual tenant-level activation by Microsoft afterward?
If manual activation is required, what's the correct way to request it without a Standard support plan (I've seen mentions of using a Quota-type support request as a workaround. is that still the recommended path)?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Yes. For Germany, Alphanumeric Sender ID eligibility includes Pay-As-You-Go, Enterprise Agreement, Modern Customer Agreement, and Modern Partner Agreement. The Germany eligibility table does not include Azure Free Trial, and the prerequisites state that an eligible subscription address is required. The Germany phone number management page also states that phone numbers can't be acquired by Azure free credits.
Upgrading to Pay-As-You-Go satisfies the documented Germany subscription eligibility requirement, but that does not guarantee the button becomes active immediately. The documented quickstart says that if the Enable Alphanumeric Sender ID button is unavailable for a supported subscription and supported subscription address, a support ticket must be created. A Microsoft Q&A resolution for this exact symptom states that tenant-level activation may still be required before the portal button becomes clickable.
The supported path in the documentation is to create a support ticket if the enable button is unavailable after meeting eligibility requirements. A Microsoft Q&A answer describes using an Azure portal Service and subscription limits (quotas) request with Other Requests to ask for Alphanumeric Sender ID capability to be enabled for the tenant when a standard technical support path is not available.

For the stated setup, the practical sequence is:

Upgrade the subscription from Azure Free Trial to an eligible paid subscription such as Pay-As-You-Go.
Verify the billing address remains Germany, which is listed as eligible for Alphanumeric Sender ID.
In Azure portal, open the Communication Services resource and go to Alphanumeric Sender ID.
Try Dynamic Enable Alphanumeric Sender ID or use the Preregistered tab if registration is required for the target destination.
If the button is still unavailable, create a support ticket. The documented product guidance says to create a support ticket in that case; the Q&A guidance indicates a quota-style request can be used to ask Microsoft to enable the capability at the tenant level.

Hello,

Just a quick heads up before we get into it, this public forum is staffed by fellow users, not Microsoft employees.

The alphanumeric sender ID functionality requires an actively paid subscription agreement like Pay-As-You-Go. Even though Germany is on the supported list, being on a free trial automatically restricts you from accessing the feature.

Upgrading your subscription to Pay-As-You-Go will not light up the activation button instantly. Microsoft restricts this specific feature at the tenant level for security and anti-abuse reasons, so they have to enable it manually on their backend even for fully eligible paid accounts.

The good news is you do not have to buy a paid Standard support plan to get it turned on. Once you are on the Pay-As-You-Go subscription, the official process is to just open a free standard support request from the Help and Support blade in the Azure Portal. You need to choose the Technical issue type, pick Azure Communication Services, and then select SMS as your category.

For your ticket title, just state that you need the alphanumeric sender ID button enabled. Make sure to paste your Subscription ID, your exact ACS resource name, your region, and mention you need it for Dynamic provisioning since Germany supports instant dynamic provisioning once unlocked.

Support handles these specific feature enablement tickets completely free of charge. Try going through that upgrade and ticketing process and you will be good to go.
