If Dragon Copilot cannot locate or use the internal microphone, work through these checks in order:

    1. In Windows, verify the microphone is selected as the input device.
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
      • Under Input, select the internal microphone.
      • In Windows 11, open the microphone properties, select Start test, speak, then Stop test and Play to confirm Windows is receiving audio.
    2. In Dragon Copilot, select the microphone directly.
      • Select the microphone icon or go to Settings > Microphone.
      • Choose the internal microphone from the available list.
      • If the system default microphone was changed outside Dragon Copilot, refresh or restart the app for the change to take effect.
    3. If using Dragon Copilot in a browser, check browser microphone permission.
      • In Microsoft Edge: Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All permissions > Microphone.
      • In Google Chrome: Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Microphone.
      • If Dragon Copilot is listed under sites not allowed to use the microphone, remove it from the block list, refresh the Dragon Copilot tab, and allow microphone access when prompted.
    4. Confirm Windows microphone access is enabled for apps.
      • In Windows 10: Start > Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
      • Turn on Allow apps to access your microphone.
      • Also ensure Allow desktop apps to access your microphone is turned on.
    5. Check the physical and device state.
      • Make sure the microphone is not muted.
      • If using a headset or Bluetooth device, make sure it is connected correctly.
      • If no microphone is connected, Dragon Copilot indicates that in the microphone icon.
    6. Restart the affected apps and device.
      • Restart Chrome or Microsoft Edge.
      • Restart the computer.
      • Then try dictation again.
    7. If Windows still does not detect the internal microphone, reinstall the audio driver.
      • Open Device Manager.
      • Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      • Right-click the audio device and select Uninstall device.
      • If shown, select the option to remove or delete the driver software, then uninstall.
      • Restart the computer so Windows reinstalls the driver automatically.
      • If needed, return to Device Manager, select Scan for hardware changes, then Update driver.

Note: uninstalling audio drivers changes device configuration temporarily until Windows reinstalls them.
