I have read many of the comments about smart charging, my laptop is 15 days old and suddenly has decided that 6% of battery charge is enough !If I had wanted to plug my computer in I would have bought a desk top not a lap top.

I now get about 25 minutes use before it needs recharging.

I used to be the manger of small group of what we then called software engineers, my biggest problem was stopping them production software routines which could do things - not because they were necessary.

This smart charging is one of those ideas, Hey guys look what I just did?

Get it removed and let us look after our batteries ourselves.

On Surface, Smart charging is designed to protect battery health and can limit maximum charge to 80% when the device is plugged in for prolonged periods or used at elevated temperatures. It is always active and turns on automatically.

A charge level around 6% is not described as normal Smart charging behavior. Smart charging on Surface limits charging to 80%, and when the battery is discharged below 20% or the device is used on battery often, Smart charging automatically pauses and allows charging to 100%.

If the goal is to charge the battery fully, use the Surface app:

Select Start and open the Surface app.
Select Battery & charging.
In Smart charging, select Charge to 100%.
If available on that model, choose a pause period for Smart charging, or set Charging mode to Adaptive to let Smart charging re-enable automatically later.

Important details:

Not all Surface devices support manual Smart charging controls in the Surface app.
A heart icon over the battery icon indicates Smart charging is active.
If Smart charging is active, the expected limit is 80%, not 6%.

Because the device is only 15 days old and is now giving about 25 minutes of battery life, that points beyond normal Smart charging behavior based on the documented feature behavior. If Charge to 100% is available and the battery still will not charge normally, that indicates an abnormal battery or charging condition rather than standard Smart charging operation.

This behavior is almost certainly not caused by Smart Charging.

If a Surface laptop only charges to 6% and then stops, that's abnormal. Smart Charging does not limit the battery to 6%.

Smart Charging typically limits charging to around 80%, not 6%.

It is designed to reduce battery wear when the laptop is plugged in for long periods.

When active, Windows/Surface usually shows a heart icon on the battery.

Restart the Device and Run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit.

Run powercfg /batteryreport in an elevated Command Prompt — it'll show design capacity vs. full charge capacity, which will tell you fast if the battery itself is degraded.

Given it's 15 days old, I'd push for an exchange rather than troubleshooting it into acceptability.

I would recommend contacting Microsoft Support and requesting a replacement (DOA/early warranty exchange) rather than a repair. A new laptop should never behave this way.
