I am sharing my experience to highlight the risks of relying on AI legal guidance for matters that carry financial or legal consequences.

A routine parking concession of £20 recently escalated to £170 after I followed advice provided by Copilot AI regarding an unintentional parking overstay.

The AI supplied information that turned out to be outdated and misleading. It encouraged me to challenge the charge, assured me that the organisation was incorrect, and insisted that I should not pay the concession. When I questioned the accuracy of the advice, the system continued to assert that both I and the issuing authority were mistaken. I later discovered that the incorrect details originated from Copilot AI itself.

As a direct result of following that guidance, I now appear to be facing potential court action. Microsoft [Live Chat] has declined responsibility for the consequences of the advice I received.

My experience raises broader concerns about how confidently AI systems can present inaccurate information, and the real‑world impact this may have on members of the public who trust these tools for guidance in legal or financial situations.

    And what about AI fact-checking before providing false or misleading information? Copilot was extremely confident in the guidance it gave, yet that confidence did not make the information correct.

    Microsoft and other AI companies should take full responsibility for misinformation generated by their AI products. They are releasing these systems to the public knowing they are not perfect. When people suffer financial loss, wasted time, or significant mental distress because they reasonably relied on inaccurate AI-generated information, those companies should be held accountable for the consequences.
