How can this happen

I use the Onedrive browser version but needed to open the App version as it is the only way to download files. I noticed that the Myfiles list did not match the files on my normal version. It has now automatically updated my browser version with an old version of my file so I have now lost 1 years worth of work. How are these clowns who design such technology?

Hello @SBM

I understand from your message that you were using OneDrive in the browser, then opened the app version to download files, and noticed that the file list did not match. After that, the browser version updated itself with an older copy of your file, which means you lost a year’s worth of work.

Sometimes this kind of situation can happen because of how OneDrive synchronizes files between the cloud and local versions.

In this case, i will share a few simple steps you can try to double‑check what might be happening on your end.

1/ Check Version History

Go to OneDrive in your browser.

Right‑click the file that reverted.Select “Version history” from the menu (usually near the bottom).

This will show older and newer versions.

The goal is to see if your recent work is still stored as a version you can restore.

2/ Look in the Recycle Bin

On the left side of OneDrive online, select “Recycle bin.”

Sometimes newer versions are moved here when replaced.

If you find your file, you can restore it.

3/ Check OneDrive App Sync Status

On your computer, open the OneDrive app.

In the system tray (bottom‑right corner), click the OneDrive cloud icon.

Look for any sync warnings or paused sync messages.

This helps confirm if the app overwrote the browser version.

4/ Restore OneDrive to a Previous Date

In OneDrive online, click the gear icon (top‑right corner).

Choose “Restore your OneDrive.”

You can select a date before the file reverted.

This restores the entire OneDrive to that point in time.

If the issue still remains after trying all the steps above, please share a screenshot or provide more detailed information. I will check the situation and continue to support you.

Kind regards,

I had the same issue, OneDrive was opened on a PC that hadn’t been used in months, and the entire OneDrive on the web and on all other computers got mixed up with an older version of one drive folders (every folder that was renamed or moved since then was duplicated). By the time we noticed it was after an hour of working, so we could not restore a previous version of OneDrive because we would lose all our work. it was a huge headache going through all our folders and deleting all duplicate folders.
