A cloud-based identity and access management service for securing user authentication and resource access
Unable to access Azure tenant – Authenticator asks for 6-digit code but my personal Microsoft account only generates 8-digit codes
Hello,
I am unable to access Azure / Microsoft Entra using my personal Microsoft account: ******@live.com.
When I try to access the Azure portal or switch tenants, Microsoft Entra requires a 6-digit verification code from Microsoft Authenticator.
However, the Authenticator entry associated with my personal Microsoft account only generates 8-digit codes. Those codes work for my personal Microsoft account and other Microsoft services, but Azure does not accept them.
I am not offered any alternative verification methods such as SMS, email, phone call, or account recovery. Because of this, I cannot:
- Access the affected Azure tenant
- Switch directories
- Review or reset the Entra MFA configuration
- Access the tenant administration options
The behavior appears similar to cases involving an orphaned or inaccessible Microsoft Entra MFA registration, where Azure expects an old 6-digit Authenticator registration that is no longer available.
Could a Microsoft moderator please help escalate this issue to the appropriate Data Protection or Identity Support team so the Microsoft Entra MFA registration can be reviewed or reset?
I can provide the following information through a private message if needed:
- Tenant ID
- Tenant domain (
xxxxx.onmicrosoft.com) - Correlation ID
- Trace ID
- Timestamp
- Screenshot of the error
- Microsoft account used to sign in , but I will not post sensitive information publicly.
Thank you.
