How to change my windows 11 Home to 11 Pro

I am having issues with the process of changing my Windows 11 Home (digital license) to Windows 11 Pro using a retail key.

No steps have worked, such as using the change product key flow (online and offline), using changepk.exe directly, or using a bootable drive.

All options either fail with err 0xC004F050 or just the Windows 11 Home option gets listed.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

You cannot use a pro key directly on home version due to edition mismatch.

You can go to Settings > System > Activation > Change product key

Disconnect internet, and disable any third party antivirus, key in the generic key instead: VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

That should get you to Pro. Once restarted, you can connect back to the internet, now you can use your own key.

In rare situation if you run into error using the generic key, run a repair install first then repeat the above.

To perform a repair installation of Windows 11 using the Windows Media Creation Tool:

The following steps should be done on a working Windows computer:

Download the Windows Media Creation Tool from Microsoft's official website. https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11 click on the "download now" button under "Create Windows 11 Installation Media"

Run the tool and select "Create installation media for another PC."

Choose "USB flash drive" as the media to use for the installation and select "Next."

Connect a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of free space to your computer.

Select the USB flash drive you want to use, and then select "Next."

The tool will then download the required files and create the installation media.

Now these steps will be done on your problematic computer:

Go to the USB drive via File Explorer, locate and run the Setup.exe file. Ideally, you should disconnect all USB and Bluetooth devices other than mouse and keyboard. Disable any 3rd party antivirus program. Disconnect the internet.

Once you run the Setup.exe file, choose the Install option, and the choose the option that keeps your files and apps.

I have no idea why the generic key wouldn't work or anything else; for that matter, to force the switch to Pro, all I was getting constantly was that same error. Doing the MCT reinstall made the process work. I have no idea why, but it did. Thank you so much for helping me out; this was driving me nuts, and I thought a fresh wipe would be necessary. You're a saint.

Im in a similar boat as I built new with MCT with W11 Home. I have not activated yet but have done enough setup and other program installs that I dont want to wipe. Does doing to MCT plan you suggested to get to W11 Pro still keep my current files or will it still wipe and have to start over. Wouldnt be the end of the world but a big pain. Im trying to still decide if I want to be on Windows or go to Linux as im used to my ROG on SteamOS for 2 years. If it helps in anyway my goal is Tailscale for VPN to us Steam Link away from home. Want to be able to use Windows built in to get desktop for random things and to turn on sleep mode when getting off as Steam will only Shut down or Suspend.
