Hi stan cardwell,
When OneNote detects that a notebook section is damaged or in an inconsistent state, it may place the section in read-only mode and create a backup to prevent further data loss.
Recommended troubleshooting steps:
- Check the notebook in OneNote for the web
- Open the notebook directly in OneNote Online.
- If the section is accessible there, the issue is likely related to the local OneNote cache.
- If the issue is present online as well, the notebook data may be corrupted.
- Recover content from the backup
- Copy any accessible pages from the affected section into a new section or notebook.
- Verify that all required content has been recovered before removing the damaged section.
- Force a sync
- Right-click the notebook and select Sync This Notebook Now.
- Review any sync errors and ensure the notebook completes synchronization.
- Refresh the local cache
- Close OneNote completely.
- Reopen the notebook from its OneDrive or SharePoint location to download a fresh copy.
- If necessary, clear the local OneNote cache and allow the notebook to resynchronize.
- Remove and reconnect the notebook
- Close the notebook in OneNote.
- Reopen it directly from OneDrive or SharePoint.
- Allow synchronization to complete before attempting to move, rename, or delete sections.
If the issue persists, please provide:
- OneNote version (OneNote for Windows, OneNote desktop, or OneNote on the web)
- Storage location (OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams, or local device)
- Whether the issue affects a single section or the entire notebook
This information will help determine whether the root cause is related to synchronization, cache corruption, or notebook data corruption.
