We have in Switzerland north GPT 4.1 Standard/Regional Deployments which retire at the 14th October 2026. There is no information what the replacement model will be. Hence, there are uncertainties. Can you provide us details on what will happen after the 14th October 2026

A blank replacement column does not mean the deployment will definitely be abandoned. Microsoft normally declares the official replacement roughly 90–120 days before a GA model retires, so the target can appear relatively close to October 14.

What happens depends on the deployment type and its version upgrade setting:

Standard regional deployments can be auto-upgraded on a region-by-region schedule when a compatible replacement is selected.
If versionUpgradeOption is set to NoAutoUpgrade, the deployment is not moved automatically; after retirement, inference stops and returns 410 Gone.
Provisioned deployments are never auto-upgraded and require a manual migration.

Check the deployment's versionUpgradeOption now. If it is OnceCurrentVersionExpired or OnceNewDefaultVersionAvailable, monitor the published upgrade schedule and Azure Service Health notifications. Microsoft can make the replacement available as part of the upgrade even if it was not previously deployable as Standard in Switzerland North.

For production, I would still avoid relying solely on an automatic cutover. As soon as the target is announced, create a side-by-side deployment, run your prompts and safety/performance tests, then switch traffic deliberately. If Swiss regional processing is a hard requirement, verify that exact regional SKU before migrating; Global or Data Zone availability is not equivalent. Also create a Service Health alert for Azure OpenAI Service so the subscription owners receive the final migration notice.

GPT-4.1 (version 2025-04-14) is currently listed as Deprecated with a retirement date of October 14, 2026. Existing deployments can continue to be used during the deprecated period; however, once the model reaches the Retired state, it is removed from service and inference requests return 410 Gone. As a result, deployments that remain on GPT-4.1 after the retirement date will no longer serve requests and must be migrated beforehand. [Model reti...soft Learn | Learn.Microsoft.com]

Regarding a successor model, the current retirement schedule does not list a replacement for GPT-4.1. At this time, Microsoft has not published a specific replacement model for Switzerland North or other regions.

Microsoft guidance indicates that customers should monitor the model retirement schedule and evaluate available models in their target region ahead of retirement. Microsoft has also stated that it does not intend to leave customers without a migration path, although the exact replacement option can vary by region and deployment type.
