Inactivated office

I own a licensed copy of Office Home & Student 2019 for Mac linked to my Microsoft account. On July 14, 2026, Word, Excel and PowerPoint suddenly became unlicensed and switched to read-only mode. The license still appears in my Microsoft account. Reinstallation, sign-in, and credential reset did not resolve the issue. Activation returns "Unknown Error 0x0". I am using macOS Tahoe 26.5.1. How can i find out why this license is inactivated and what options are available.

Hello,

Unfortunately, the license removal tool will not resolve this particular issue.

Starting July 13, 2026, Office 2019 for Mac entered reduced functionality mode because its licensing certificate can no longer be updated. Office may still open documents, but it can no longer activate for editing, saving, or creating files. The 0x0 error is part of that activation failure.

Force-quitting Excel did not cause the problem. It likely caused Excel to check the license again, which exposed the certificate issue.

Microsoft confirms that Office 2019 for Mac cannot be updated to the required version, and reinstalling Office 2019 will not resolve it.

The available options are:

  1. Use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint online for free through Microsoft 365 for the web.
  2. Purchase a supported version such as Office Home 2024.
  3. Subscribe to Microsoft 365.

Your existing documents are not deleted or damaged, but Office 2019 for Mac can no longer be restored to full editing mode through activation troubleshooting.

I understand that you are having issue with activating Office 2019.
Please try to download and install 16.77 version by using this direct installer: https://officecdn.microsoft.com/pr/C1297A47-86C4-4C1F-97FA-950631F94777/MacAutoupdate/Microsoft_365_and_Office_16.77.23091003_Installer.pkg

Note: When prompted to update, do not click on update as it will just defeat the purpose of installing the specific version Office which is 16.77.
