Yes. Windows Server Client Access Licenses (CALs) are generally backward compatible. That means Windows Server 2025 User CALs can be used to access your existing Windows Server 2022 Standard environment. Microsoft designs CALs this way so customers don’t have to maintain separate CAL versions for each server release.

The important point is that CALs are tied to the highest server version they support. So if you purchase 2025 CALs, they will cover access to 2025 servers as well as earlier versions like 2022 or 2019. What you cannot do is use older CALs (e.g., 2022 CALs) to access a newer 2025 server.

From an operational perspective, you don’t need to make any changes on the server itself, CAL compliance is a licensing requirement rather than a technical enforcement mechanism. As long as your CALs are properly documented and purchased, you’re covered.
