This error typically happens when Word loses track of the file's exact storage path after a folder reorganization, a cloud syncing issue, or a file renaming event.

    1. Quick Fixes for iPad

✓ Locate the file directly: Open the iOS Files app instead of the Word app. Navigate to the local storage or cloud service (like OneDrive or iCloud Drive) where you kept it and open it from there.

✓ Check the "Recent" tab: If you are trying to open it from the "Recent" list inside the Word app, clear the list or skip it. The shortcut link is likely broken.

✓ Search for the file: Use the iPad's system-wide Spotlight search or the search bar inside the Files app to look for the file name. It may have been accidentally dragged into another folder.

✓ Force close the Word app: Swipe up from the bottom of your iPad screen, find the Word app preview, and swipe it away to force close. Reopen and try again.

    2. Cloud-Specific Troubleshooting

✓ Verify OneDrive/iCloud sync: Ensure your iPad is fully connected to the internet. If the file was created recently, it might not have finished uploading to the cloud before the path shifted.

✓ Check the Trash or Recycle Bin: Go to OneDrive.com or iCloud.com via a web browser. Check the online recycle bin to make sure the file wasn't accidentally deleted or moved to a temporary directory.

If you are still unable to access the document, let me know where the file was originally saved (e.g., local iPad storage, OneDrive, or iCloud) and if you recently updated iOS or the Word app so we can narrow down the cause.

    Hi, @Ton Uiterwijk

Where was the Word file saved: OneDrive, iCloud Drive, or “On My iPad”?

Please open the Files app and search for the file name. If you find it, tap and hold it, then choose Move or Duplicate, and try opening the new copy in Word.

Also check whether the file was recently renamed, moved to another folder, or deleted. If it is stored in OneDrive, try opening it from OneDrive Web here https://onedrive.live.com

What is the exact error message, and can you still see the file in the Files app?
