To fix a Surface Go that turns on and shows “No Bootable Device”, follow these steps in order.
- Disconnect accessories and charge
- Disconnect all USB drives, SD cards, USB accessories, external monitors, Type Cover, and any Surface Dock.
- Connect the original Surface power supply, plug it into a wall outlet, and charge for at least 15 minutes.
- Turn the device on again.
If the message still appears, use the dedicated USB repair solution for Surface Go.
- Create the Surface Go USB repair drive (on another PC)
- On another computer, insert a USB drive that is at least 8 GB and format it to FAT32.
- Download the USB solution ZIP file: SurfaceGo_FixNoBootableDevice.zip from the provided link in the article.
- Open
SurfaceGo_FixNoBootableDevice.zip(usually in the Downloads folder). - Select all folders and files inside the ZIP and copy them to the FAT32‑formatted USB drive.
- When finished, the USB drive should contain 38 folders and 2 files.
- Boot the Surface Go from the USB repair drive
- Insert the prepared USB drive into the USB‑C port on the Surface Go (use a USB‑A to USB‑C adapter if needed).
- Press and hold the volume‑down button.
- While holding volume‑down, press and release the power button.
- Keep holding volume‑down until the Microsoft logo appears.
- When the message “Please wait while we install a system update” appears, release the volume‑down button.
- Do not turn off or use the device while the process runs. The screen may briefly go blank, then the same message will reappear with a blue progress bar.
- When the process completes, the Surface will restart and Windows should start automatically.
- Remove the USB drive.
- If the USB solution does not work
- Check UEFI (BIOS) to ensure Boot from USB devices is enabled. For details, see How to use Surface UEFI.
- If Windows shows error messages after the USB process, Windows may be corrupted. In that case, reset or reinstall Windows using a Surface Recovery image. See Surface Recovery Image Download.
- If it still will not boot
- Use Microsoft’s service options:
- Create a service order and send the device to Microsoft.
- Or use an in‑person service center where available.
- If technically experienced, consider self‑repair options and official guides.
