Equation Editor Text Formatting (Italic) Reverts After Reopening PowerPoint File

Could you please try creating a brand-new PowerPoint presentation and insert a very simple equation? After applying the formatting changes, save the presentation, close PowerPoint completely, and then reopen the file to see whether the formatting reverts. This will help identify whether the issue is isolated to a particular file or occurs with all PowerPoint presentations.

I would also appreciate it if you could provide the exact steps you use when you "convert the characters to Normal Text" and apply the italic formatting. For example, which options are selected within the Equation Editor and at what point the formatting is applied. I attempted to reproduce the behavior on my end, but I was unable to change the equation font in the same way as described, so having your exact workflow would be very helpful.

If possible, could you also share screenshots showing:

• The expected result (how the equation should look after formatting).
• The actual result after reopening the presentation when the formatting has reverted.

Having both screenshots side by side will help us compare the behavior and better understand what may be changing.

I would recommend starting with the Repair option. If the issue persists afterward, please proceed with the Online Repair. If your Office version provides a Reset option, you may also try that as a final troubleshooting step.

Once you can provide the results from the new presentation test, the screenshots, the exact formatting steps, and the outcome of the repair, I'll be in a much better position to investigate further and assist with the issue.

I tried creating a new PowerPoint presentation to check whether the issue only applies to those specific files, but I think it also affects newly created files.

First, I tried creating the formula using the Equation Editor. I went to Insert and then clicked Equations. After that, I created the formula that I wanted to insert. See the attached image below.

Next, I highlighted the entire equation and selected Normal Text, which is located under Conversions, below Linear. While everything was still highlighted, I went to the Home tab and selected Times New Roman as the font.

After selecting the font, I highlighted only the variables (v and a) and italicized them. See the expected result I want below.

I then saved the presentation. However, when I reopened it, the variables were no longer italicized and had reverted to their previous state, but still in Times New Roman, which is good. See the image below.

This appears to be a PowerPoint equation-formatting limitation or recent regression, not a damaged presentation. “Normal Text” changes the variables from mathematical identifiers into ordinary text, and PowerPoint may discard the manually applied italic style when saving the equation. Its supported equation font is primarily Cambria Math.

Here are some suggestions you can try:

For an editable equation, do not select Normal Text. Leave v and a in math mode, where variables are italicized automatically. This will use Cambria Math rather than Times New Roman.

If Times New Roman is required, it is recommended that you build the fraction from normal PowerPoint objects instead: use separate text boxes for 2v and a, add a horizontal line between them, italicize only v and a, then select all three objects and choose Group. Normal text-box formatting should remain editable and avoids Equation Editor reformatting.

For a fixed final version, copy the correctly formatted equation and use Paste Special > Picture (Enhanced Metafile). The appearance should remain unchanged, although the equation will no longer be directly editable.

Since repair, updating, and a new presentation produce the same result, further reinstalling is unlikely to help. Submit the reproducible example through File > Feedback so it can be investigated as an equation-saving issue.

This is not the only thing that changes in an equation after reopening a Powerpoint file. I have a similar problem with small fractions. The equation editor offers the option to choose between a normal fraction and a small fraction. Recently all small fractions change to normal fractions after saving, closing and reopening the document. Quite annoying.
