Windows says my product key isn't valid anymore

I just upgraded my PC and it all went well but then I see that my PC rejected my key even though it's worked for years. It says I "Don't have a valid digital license or product key."

I tried putting it in again same thing

I tried contacting support but it's like Microsoft is allergic to helping someone and just refer you back to forums and useless websites so here I am.

I have a key I bought it in 2020 with a USB from Microcenter when I built my PC it's valid and legal and I bought the version that can be used multiple times. What's the issue?

I'm not looking for a cookie cutter response please actually help me thank you

If Windows suddenly reports your product key is no longer valid, first verify you're running the correct edition (Home or Pro), then use the Activation Troubleshooter. If the issue persists, sign in with your Microsoft account or contact Microsoft Support to confirm your license status.

I am running windows 11 home and I am using a windows 10 homes key but its worked for years before today so I don't think that is the issue. Do you have a link for how I can confirm the status of it? I cant seem to find anything like that.

Open the Settings App.

Go to System - Activation.

Click the Troubleshoot button.

Select 'I changed my hardware', then in the resulting list, do you see the previously activated device to choose that and move the license to the new hardware..

If that process is not successful.

Download the free ShowKeyPlus app from the Microsoft Store.

On the left of that app, click 'Check Edition', then enter your product key into that app.

Please provide a screenshot of that app window and please hide your product key in the screenshot.

For 1 ) It states "We can't find any devices linked to your Microsoft account that can be used for reactivating the device you're using right now"

There is no problem indicated with your product key, however, if the process to move the license to the new hardware cannot see the previously activated device, then the only option is to contact Microsoft support to get them to reactivate your license, their support is very hard to contact, it is mostly online Ai support these days, try to find a local support number in your area, or open the Get Help app in Windows and repeatedly ask the bot in that app to 'speak to a person', you should eventually get a link to speak to their support via live chat support.

Can you just confirm the key you are using does not end with 8HVX7. If it does it is a generic key that cannot be used to activate windows.

How does that make sense? I bought it with a windows USB at Microcenter and it’s worked for years before now.

I checked the MicroCenter website, the licenses they sell are indicated as genuine, if you found a generic key in Windows, that cannot be used to activate Windows, it is the original retail product key you need to use, and if that does not resolve the problem, you do need to contact Microsoft Support to ask them to re-activate Windows 11.

So it does end with the last 5 characters of the generic product key?

Is that the key that came with the package you bought?

Yes it’s the key that came with the package. I’ve used it for years I’ve never had an issue until now. It does end up those letters/numbers but again why did it stop working NOW and not before?

That is a mystery, it shouldn't have activated windows on its own. Just to confirm the full key is :

YTMG3-N6DKC-DKB77-7M9GH-8HVX7 if this is printed on the package labelling you received from Microcenter it is wrong.

I cannot explain how it was able to activate windows previously.

NO ok sorry im was being a big dumb dumb and i followed a YT tutorial to try to find my key which obviously wasn’t that. I’ve figured it out I know the difference now I should have done my research before doing so. My apologies for wasting everyone’s time.

So I was dumb and I ran a command to try to find my key which obviously I didn’t do right so yes I was dumb and I don’t know what I’m talking about. I found my answer.

There is a possibility ShowKeyPlus may display the original key.
