I made some objects (grouped shapes, I guess?) where the desired behavior is that if I drag a connector to any part of the object, I want the connector to only snap to the one single connection point I defined. I used the connection point tool to delete every single other connection point other than the one I want active and only have Glue to Connection points selected under Snap & Glue but it still keeps gluing the connector to the other shapes in the group/the outside of their container unless I specifically drag the connector right onto the point. How can I make the connectors only snap to the points I set?

Dear Laura,

I understand why this can be confusing. The Snap & Glue dialog may look like it controls the exact place where a connector can attach, but it mainly controls which types of targets Visio can snap or glue to.

In this case, selecting Glue to Connection points allows connectors to attach to connection points, but it doesn’t force a connector to always use only one custom connection point. If the connector is dropped on the body or edge of the grouped shape, Visio may still treat it as a shape connection instead of a specific point connection.

To create a fixed connection to the point you set, the connector endpoint needs to be dragged directly onto that connection point until it is highlighted. This creates a static point connection.

I can see how this may be inconvenient, especially when you are trying to control exactly how connectors attach to your grouped shape. Based on the current behavior, dragging the connector directly to the intended connection point is the most reliable way to make sure Visio uses that specific point.

Right, but since I deleted all the connection points but the ones I want to use and disabled all the other options, I don't understand why it's still gluing to things that are not connection points. I don't want it to glue to shape geometry, that's why I unchecked the box. So why is it still happening? The expected behavior is that if I only check "glue to connection points" and "snap to connection points" then it would only snap/glue to connection points and just not snap/glue to anything else. There seems to be no difference in what the connectors will snap/glue to regardless of what I choose in that dialog.

I completely understand your expectation. Unfortunately, when a connector is first created, it may not automatically align with the specific custom connection point you intend to use.

In that case, you'll need to manually drag the connector endpoint directly onto the desired connection point to ensure it attaches there.

Even with only Snap to Connection Points and Glue to Connection Points enabled, Visio doesn't provide a strict "connection-points-only" mode, so connectors can still attach to the shape itself if they aren't placed directly on a connection point.

I wish I could offer a setting or workaround to change this behavior. However, based on the support resources available to me, this is the way Visio currently functions. My role is limited to providing guidance, so I'm unable to change the product behavior or escalate feature requests on your behalf.

I appreciate your understanding.

Currently, Visio doesn't provide a setting to automatically force connectors to attach only to predefined connection points.

To ensure a connector attaches to the specific connection point you created, you need to drag the connector directly onto that point. Once connected, you can move the shapes freely without losing the connection.
