Surface Studio Complete system Freeze (not blue screen)

Device: Surface Laptop Studio (Gen 1), Model 1964, Intel Core i5-11300H, 16GB RAM

Firmware: SAM 7.120.139.0, UEFI 6.73.141.0 (fully updated as of most recent check)

Issue: Recurring complete system freeze - mouse and keyboard become fully unresponsive, no BSOD or crash dump generated. The only way to recover is holding the power button for 3+ minutes to force a hard shutdown, indicating the Embedded Controller (EC) itself is not responding to a normal power button press during the freeze.

Observed pattern: Power delivery via USB-C appears to cycle (visibly connecting/disconnecting/reconnecting) around the time freezes occur, suggesting a Power Delivery negotiation failure between the charger and the device that may be leaving the EC in an unresponsive state.

Troubleshooting already completed:

  • Firmware and drivers fully updated via Windows Update and Surface app
  • SFC/DISM system file checks
  • Surface Diagnostic Toolkit run

This device is out of warranty, so I understand a repair isn't guaranteed, but I wanted to flag this clearly in case it's a known firmware issue affecting other Model 1964 units, since I've seen other users report identical symptoms (freeze with no BSOD, EC unresponsive to power button) in other threads. Is there a firmware fix planned, or a way to get this diagnosed even though it's out of warranty?

I searched but didn't find any official Microsoft advisory or KB acknowledging this as a known firmware defect for Model 1964 specifically.

Open Event Viewer and look around the freeze time for:

    Kernel-Power 41

    WHEA-Logger

    Surface Integration events

    USBXHCI

    USBHUB3

The absence of preceding errors is also useful information.

If the machine also freezes while sitting in the UEFI setup screen, that would be particularly strong evidence of a firmware or hardware problem rather than anything within Windows.

Given everything you've described, I'd estimate the possibilities roughly as:

Firmware/Embedded Controller or USB-C Power Delivery firmware issue

Motherboard hardware fault (USB-C PD controller, EC, or power circuitry)
