MS Teams has repeatedly failed to uninstall Copilot

Copilot continues to be re-enabled in the MS Teams desktop app after repeated uninstallations. From what I can tell, the "Uninstall" option doesn't actually remove Copilot, as it reappears whenever I relaunch the app.

I would like an explanation for why this is happening and instructions to permanently remove it from the app.

Hi,

Thank you for reaching out and for sharing your concern.

The reason the Copilot tile keeps coming back is that the client-side "Uninstall" only removes it for that session. The app is being re-provisioned and re-pinned from a Teams App setup (pinning) policy on the service side, so every time Teams relaunches or refreshes policy, it restores Copilot. A per-user uninstall cannot override that.

One important thing to note about pinning behavior:

  • For users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, the Copilot app is pinned by default, even though it isn't listed in the policy. Your IT admin can add it to the policy to manage its order, but it remains pinned even if they remove it from the policy.
  • For users without a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, pinning behaves like any other app and can be managed through app setup policies.

This can be controlled in the Teams admin center. To resolve the issue, please reach out to your organization's IT admin and share the following steps:

  1. Sign in to the Teams admin center and go to Teams apps > Setup policies.
  2. Create a new policy, remove Microsoft 365 Copilot from the list of pinned and installed apps.

  1. Save the policy.
  2. Go to Users > Manage users, select the user by clicking to the left of the user name, and then select Edit settings.
  3. Select App setup policy > Edit.
  4. Select the created policy to assign to the user.

  1. Select Apply.
  2. Once finished, please quit and relaunch Teams. Allow up to 24 hours for the policy to fully propagate.
