WEBP images in Word 365

I am trying to copy and paste information that includes images in .webp format from a web browser page into a word document for future reference. After pasting into word there is a blank image wherever there should be a .webp image. I have read seemingly conflicting articles, some saying that word 365 now supports .webp images and some saying that it does not. I have updated Word but that didn't resolve the issue. I also tried installing the webp image extension but that didn't help.

Current versions of Word support the insertion of WebP format. If the clipboard is not handling them, try right-clicking on the image on the web page. Choose Save Image As and save to your hard disk. Then in Word, choose Insert>Pictures>This Device and select the downloaded photo. Any better?

WebP does have file format variants, so it's possible that the Word import filter does not handle every variety of WebP.

It seems that Word will not display a .webp that is copied from a Firefox browser. (An important detail I forgot to mention.) I discovered that Firefox has an extension that will convert a .webp into a .png before pasting into word which will then display in the word document.
