Cannot save MS Office 2019 files.

I am running Microsoft Office 2019 Excel downloaded on my computer. When I open a workbook, make an entry and then try to save the file, I get an error message that says, "Errors were detected when trying to save the file." Then a message says to save the files under a different name. I do this, but then I get another message that says "Excel encountered errors during the save." I no longer have the installation file for Office 2019 since I upgrade my earlier version of Office 2010 by downloading the upgrade directly from the Microsoft website. Of course, now they won't support the product and want to force me to purchase a newer version, or worse, try to make me pay for it as long as I live by means of a subscription product. Can anyone offer advice? The problem may be with a file called Microsoft Office Runtime.

Disable Controlled Folder Access under Windows Security or clear corrupt cache files in %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Office\16.0\OfficeFileCache. Alternatively, run sfc /scannow via elevated Command Prompt to repair system dependencies without requiring the original Office 2019 installer.

    Sanika -- I tried all of these suggestions, including both Quick Repair and Online Repair options. None of them worked. Even worse, the Online Repair erased all the functioning Office icons in the taskbar, and from the start menu, so I couldn't open the files unless I clicked on them. I found the Office setup file in the Download folder from 8/2/2025 and I reinstalled the Office programs. However, the problem still persists. I cannot save any local Classic Office program files, unless they are online. Trouble is, the damn program wants me to save everything online, which I don't want. I am going to have to call the Microsoft Support technicians and fight with them, apparently. I don't want any online programs, unless they are for storage.

    This doesn't sound like a Microsoft Office Runtime issue. The fact that Excel asks you to save with a different name and then still fails usually points to either a damaged Office installation, an add-in, or a problem writing to the folder you're saving to.

    A few things I'd try before considering a reinstall:

    Start Excel in Safe Mode (Win + R, type excel /safe) and see if the file saves. If it does, one of your add-ins is probably causing the problem.

    Create a brand-new blank workbook and try saving it. If that works, the issue may be with the original workbook rather than Excel itself.

    Save the file to a different local folder (like Desktop or Documents) to rule out a permissions issue with the current location.

    Run an Office Quick Repair from Control Panel > Programs and Features > Microsoft Office 2019 > Change. If that doesn't help, try the Online Repair option.

    Also, don't let Microsoft support convince you that you need to buy Microsoft 365 just because Office 2019 isn't under mainstream support. Office 2019 is a perpetual license, and this type of save error is usually something that can be fixed without purchasing a newer version.

    One question that would help narrow it down: does this happen with every Excel file, including a brand-new blank workbook, or only with one specific workbook?
