How to fix error 0xE0000796: OneNote can't sync your notes because your account is out of space

Hi Erin, 

Based on your sharing, the error 0xE0000796 is a Quota Exceeded error, but it doesn't always mean your visible OneDrive storage is full. OneNote can still show it if the notebook is too large, local OneNote cache storage is full or deleted items/recycle bins are still counting. Especially, OneNote notebooks stored in OneDrive have a 2GB file size limit. 

Since you have already deleted large files and restarting both apps but the issue persists, I suggest checking these next: 

1/ Check in OneDrive web version 

• Open OneDrive in a browser (e.g. Safari) 
• Check properties of the notebooks/files stored in OneDrive to see whether it exceeds the 2GB size limit 
• If your notebooks have large sections, attachments, etc., you may need to move them out of OneNote and store as normal OneDrive files and then link to them from the note 

2/ Empty both recycle bins 

• In OneDrive on the web, open the Recycle bin from the left menu. 
• Click the circle to the left of the header row. 

• Select Delete. 
• Select the Second-stage recycle bin at the bottom of that same page. 

• Click the circle to the left of the header row and select Delete. 

3/ Clear out deleted pages and sections 

Since they still count toward the notebook size until they are permanently removed.  

• On your Mac, open the affected notebook 
• Go to Notebooks > Deleted Notes > Empty Deleted Notes to remove them for good.  

This often clears the error when the account genuinely has space available.
