Microsoft Office Excel 2606 - Drag + Drop is not previewed correctly

Hi,

since the update to 2606, we experience issues with the drag+drop function in some Excel workbooks.

We use some internal tools to arrange data that can be dragged+dropped into Excel spreadsheets. Until now, as soon as I hover with the data from the tool over a cell in Excel, a grey-ish frame is shown in Excel around the area that the data will be dropped into. Since updating to 2606 on various machines internally, the grey-ish frame is black and the area rectangle is displayed offset to the mouse pointer by a few cells.

This seems to be only a graphic bug, because the data is dropped in the correct cell the mouse points to, not where the rectangle is shown. For now, this only happens for new or old files of some specific workbook templates that we use. In empty workbooks, everything works as expected. I assume that our templates use some kind of data or view features (e.g. fixed headers) that cause this issue, and empty workbooks do not have them.

I tried to attach a gif, but that did not work.

If you need our specific workbooks to replicate the issue please contact me directly, but unfortunately I cant share them here for all users.

Best regards!

EDIT: Issue happens on both builds Build 20131.20090 and Build 20131.20112

Hi @LW,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on the behavior you've described, it is also possible that the issue is not caused by the workbook templates themselves, but rather by a compatibility issue between your company's internal drag-and-drop tool and the recent Excel Version 2606 update. Since the functionality itself still works and only the visual drop indicator appears incorrect, this may indicate that changes introduced in the latest Excel build are affecting how the internal tool interacts with Excel's user interface.

As forum moderators, I do not have access to Microsoft's backend systems, nor can I modify product behavior, investigate code-level issues, or submit changes directly to the Excel product team on your behalf. Because of that, the most effective way to ensure the issue reaches the engineers responsible for Excel is to submit feedback directly through the application using Help > Feedback > Report a Problem and include as much detail as possible, such as:

User's image

  • Excel Version 2606
  • Affected builds (20131.20090 and 20131.20112)
  • Screenshots or GIF recordings (if available)
  • Details about the workbook templates involved
  • Information that the issue affects multiple users in your organization
  • Any observations regarding frozen panes, custom views, or other template-specific features

Microsoft recommends using the in-app feedback mechanism because it sends diagnostic information directly to the product team and helps them investigate potential regressions or compatibility issues.

In the meantime, if the issue is significantly impacting productivity, you may also consider rolling affected users back to a previous Excel version where the drag-and-drop behavior worked as expected while the issue is being investigated.

Thank you again for your time and understanding. I really appreciate your patience, and I’m here to help. Looking forward to your response.
