A tool for managing user identities, credentials, and access across on-premises and cloud environments
Frequent sign-in prompts usually indicate either an account sign-in problem or an app/client configuration issue.
Try these steps depending on where the prompts occur:
- If Outlook keeps asking for the password (desktop client)
For older affected versions of Outlook connecting to Microsoft 365 or Exchange Online:- Exit Outlook.
- Open Control Panel → Mail.
- Click Show Profiles, select the Outlook profile, then Properties.
- Click E-mail Accounts.
- Select the email account → Change → More Settings.
- In the Microsoft Exchange dialog, open the Security tab.
- Set Logon network security to Anonymous Authentication, then click OK.
- Click Next → Finish, then close all dialog boxes.
- If sign-in fails or locks frequently in web or apps
Use the Microsoft account sign-in helper and recovery tools:- If the password is forgotten, follow Reset your password from the account help page.
- If the password is known but “stopped working,” use the Sign-in Helper tool to diagnose and fix sign-in issues.
- If verification codes or security checks appear often, review the guidance under Help with account sign in verification codes and How to keep your account safe and secure to ensure security info is up to date and reduce extra challenges.
- If the account is temporarily blocked or rate-limited
If there have been many failed sign-in attempts or suspicious activity, the account may be temporarily blocked:- Avoid repeated sign-in attempts for at least 24 hours.
- If the issue persists after waiting, follow the Unblock my Outlook.com account and Request for Account Reinstatement guidance from the Q&A thread to restore access.
- If sign-in loops or reloads when managing account settings
In some cases, a corrupted profile or account data can cause repeated sign-in loops:- On mobile Outlook (Android/iOS), delete and re-add the Outlook.com account via Settings → select the affected account → Delete Account, then add it again.
- On Windows, if Microsoft 365 apps or OneDrive are involved, removing and reconnecting the profile (or account in the app) can resolve persistent sign-in or “not connected to Internet” errors.
If sign-in problems continue after these steps, use the Sign-in Helper tool mentioned in the Microsoft account support article to get a tailored path based on the exact error messages and scenario.
