Use the built-in Copilot troubleshooters and license checks to resolve this.
- Run the Copilot troubleshooters
- Open the Get Help app on Windows.
- In the Search box, type Copilot License Troubleshooter and run it. Follow all steps it suggests.
- If connection issues are suspected, in Get Help search for Copilot connectivity troubleshooter and run that as well. It will check for firewall rules or other blockers.
- Confirm the Copilot license is valid and recognized
- If using Microsoft 365 apps (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.), make sure the signed-in account actually has a Copilot license and that the correct account is selected.
- If Copilot is missing in Microsoft 365 apps even though a license exists, use the Copilot license troubleshooter as above.
- If using Copilot in Microsoft 365 web apps
- Some license validation and sign-in issues in web apps are caused by blocked third‑party cookies.
- Enable third‑party cookies in the browser being used:
- Microsoft Edge: Settings and more → Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Manage and delete cookies and site data → make sure Block third-party cookies is Off.
- Google Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → ensure Allow third-party cookies is selected.
- Mozilla Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → under Enhanced Tracking Protection, choose Custom and ensure Cookies is unchecked.
- Safari (macOS): Safari → Settings… → Privacy tab → uncheck Prevent cross-site tracking; then Advanced tab → under Privacy, uncheck Allow-privacy-preserving measurement of ad effectiveness and Block all cookies.
- Check for license validation errors in Microsoft 365 apps
- If seeing messages about Copilot license validation, verify:
- Signed in with the correct account that has Copilot.
- For work/school files, use the work or school account if the organization provides Copilot.
- If working on files stored in third‑party storage, move or copy the file to OneDrive or SharePoint and then try Copilot again.
- If seeing messages about Copilot license validation, verify:
- If Copilot is still blocked or unavailable
- For home users: after these steps, use the Get Help app to contact Support directly from Windows.
- For business users: contact the Microsoft 365 administrator to verify Copilot licensing and any policies that might be blocking Copilot; the admin can then contact Microsoft support if needed.
