Try these steps to troubleshoot the Surface charger and power supply:
- Check connections and reset the power supply
- Disconnect the charger from Surface.
- Unplug the power supply from the wall outlet and disconnect any USB accessories from the power supply.
- Wait at least 10 seconds to let the power supply reset.
- Clean the connector with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and check for any visible damage to the cable, connector, or port.
- Plug the charger back into the wall and then into Surface, and check if the LED light turns on.
- Flip the connector
The Surface Connect plug can be inserted either way. Remove it, rotate it 180 degrees, plug it back in securely, and see if the LED lights up and the device starts charging. - Try a different outlet or power strip
Plug the charger into another wall outlet, surge protector, or power strip to rule out an issue with the power source. - Disconnect accessories and charge directly
- Disconnect USB drives, SD cards, external monitors, Type Cover, and any other accessories.
- If using a Surface Dock, unplug Surface from the dock and charge directly with the original power supply for at least 15 minutes, then try turning it on.
- Try another Surface power supply or USB‑C PD charger (if available)
- If another genuine Surface power supply is available, test with that.
- If the device has USB‑C, try a USB‑C PD charger that meets the charging requirements.
- If another charger works, start a service order for the original power supply. If none work and the LED never lights, start a service order for the Surface.
Because the device is less than a year old, it may still be under warranty, so replacing a faulty charger or servicing the device is likely covered depending on the specific warranty.
